King Tides bring another threat of flooding to Puget Sound cities

Some cities in the Puget Sound, coastal, and San Juan Island regions may see minor flooding on Thursday due to another round of King Tides. However, the tides will be lower than those seen on Tuesday that caused major flooding across parts of Western Washington.

For instance, in Snohomish County, dozens of vehicles were submerged in floodwater earlier this week. In South Seattle, an industrial park was inundated with water.

Though severe flooding is not expected, the National Weather Service has issued Coastal Flood Advisories for some areas for Thursday and Friday.

Areas which may be affected are Everett and vicinity, the Tacoma area, the Admiralty Inlet area, Seattle and vicinity, Bremerton and vicinity, and San Juan and western Skagit counties. The advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. Friday.

The North Coast zone is also under an advisory until 7 a.m. Friday.

Flooding of parking lots, parks, and roads are expected with only isolated road closures, according to NWS.

The Kitsap Sheriff’s Office recommends when dealing with water on roads:

  • Do not drive or walk through moving water. Six inches of water can cause someone to fall and a foot of water can make a driver lose control of their car.

  • Avoid flood water if possible. It can be contaminated.

  • If you become submerged inside a vehicle, exit through a window.
