King tides, heavy rain bring flooding to South Florida

South Florida was under a flood watch until 8 p.m. Sunday as the result of heavy rain Saturday and more rain in the forecast.

Flooding from king tides was spotted in downtown Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood this weekend.

Slow-moving thunderstorms are forecast to bring periods of heavy rain Sunday, with 2 to 4 inches projected in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, with 6 or more inches predicted in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

“We had some street flooding yesterday. The ground is saturated, and it won’t take a lot of rainfall to create more issues. The rainfall is expected to be fairly high,” Chris Fisher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Sunday.

Fisher said there were also reports of flooding associated with king tides between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday. These included A1A and Sheridan Street in Hollywood and Las Olas Boulevard and Coral Way in Fort Lauderdale. He said he expects there is more that hasn’t been reported to the National Weather Service yet.

“It’s mainly street flooding. We haven’t heard about any property damage,” he said.

Fisher said he expects coastal flooding from high tides to continue for a couple of days.

The forecast for Monday has showers likely and a thunderstorm possible before noon, with rain and thunderstorms also possible in the afternoon. The chance of rain is 70%, with up to 3/4 of an inch possible.
