Third quarter: Kings 90, Warriors 80

The Kings are 12 minutes away from forcing a decisive Game 7 in their first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors, but the defending NBA champions won’t go down without a fight.

The Kings went up by 10 early in the second half, but the Warriors came back to cut the deficit to five after Domantas Sabonis left the game due to foul trouble. Sabonis picked up his third and fourth fouls in a span of 15 seconds early in the third quarter. He remained in the game but had to go to the bench after getting whistled for his fifth foul with 6:23 to play in the third.

The Warriors were down 75-70 following two free throws by Klay Thompson at the 4:42 mark, but Malik Monk made three 3-pointers in a span of 1:37 to put the Kings up 87-75.

The Kings are outplaying the Warriors in virtually every phase of the game. They have 37-17 advantage in points off the bench, a 16-8 advantage in fastbreak points and a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Halftime: Kings 58, Warriors 51

Trey Lyles and Malik Monk provided a nice spark off the bench for Sacramento. Lyles hit a 3-pointer to give the Kings a 28-25 lead early in the second quarter. Lyles later threw down a dunk that put them up 43-35.

Kings coach Mike Brown brought Domantas Sabonis back into the game midway through the second quarter. Sabonis went down after taking a shot to the face from Warriors center Kevon Looney on a jump ball. While going up for the ball, Looney struck Sabonis in the face with his right elbow, causing a knot to form near Sabonis’ left eye.

The Kings took their largest lead of the half when Terence Davis made a 3-pointer to put them up 49-38. The Warriors cut the deficit to six on a couple of occasions and trailed by seven at the half.

The Kings shot 40.7% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range in the first half. The Warriors shot 35.6% overall and 27.8% from beyond the arc. Sacramento had a 32-20 rebounding advantage, but Golden State got to the free-throw line far more often, going 14 of 19 at the stripe while the Kings went 7 of 9.

First quarter: Warriors 25, Kings 23

The Kings jumped out to an 8-0 lead while the Warriors went 0 of 4 from the field to start the game. Harrison Barnes threw down a dunk with authority, Domantas Sabonis drained a 3-pointer from the corner and Keegan Murray hit a 3 from the same spot, prompting Warriors coach Steve Kerr to take an early timeout.

Golden State came back to take an 18-17 lead on a free throw by Donte DiVincenzo. A late 3-pointer by DiVincenzo gave the Warriors a 25-23 lead at the end of the first period.

Draymond Green came off the bench for the third game in a row after serving a one-game suspension for stomping on Sabonis’ chest earlier in the series. Green received a huge ovation from the home crowd when he checked in for the first time at 6:26 mark. It wasn’t long before he was barking at officials after picking up two fouls in his first minute of action.

The Kings went with a small-ball lineup late in the first quarter with De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Terence Davis, Murray and Trey Lyles.

The Kings shot 31% from the field and 23.1% from 3-point in the opening period, but they outrebounded the Warriors 20-10 with a 9-1 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Searching for rhythm

The Kings are still searching for offensive rhythm going into Game 6 of their first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors on Friday at Chase Center in San Francisco.

They better find it fast because they now face an elimination game against the defending NBA champions on their home floor. The Warriors hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Kings must win Game 6 to force a decisive Game 7 on Sunday in Sacramento.

The Kings set a record with the highest offensive rating (119.4) in NBA history this season. They were No. 1 in scoring (120.7), No. 5 in 3-point goals (13.8) and No. 9 in 3-point percentage (.369).

The Kings haven’t been the same since the playoffs started. They are seventh out of 16 playoff teams in scoring (115.6), 10th in offensive rating (110.5), 11th in 3-point goals (11.2) and 15th in 3-point shooting (.301).

Rookie forward Keegan Murray has come on strong over the past two games, making 7 of 9 from 3-point range to raise his percentage in the series to 47.1%. Harrison Barnes (22.7%) is far below his regular-season mark of 37.4% and Kevin Huerter (16%) has fallen off dramatically after shooting a career-high 40.2% this season.

The Kings are getting open looks, but they are being forced to take different shots than they got in the regular season because the Warriors have disrupted their dribble-handoff game with Domantas Sabonis. Another issue is the fact that the Kings are exerting so much energy on the defensive end, which takes a toll on the legs and lungs. The Kings are No. 8 in defensive rating (113.6) in the playoffs after finishing 24th (116.0) during the regular season.

Kings coach Mike Brown pointed to a statistic Kings senior director of coaching analytics Robbie Lemons and assistant coach Luke Loucks shared with him prior to Wednesday’s Game 5 loss.

“They told me an analytics stat that we’re generating the most open 3s on a per game basis in the playoffs, and that’s great to hear because we’re going against the NBA champions,” Brown said. “If we’re doing that, we want to continue to do that and let it fly.

“One of the things I always caution everybody about is we don’t have a lot of guys who have been in key positions and have advanced past the first round and been a big-time contributor to that advancement. That in itself takes a lot out of you from the standpoint that we’re not going to get the same shots that we got in the regular season. They’re taking away certain things to mess with our rhythm.”

Fox vs. Curry

Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox has demonstrated star power in this series despite playing Game 5 with an avulsion fracture of the index finger on his left shooting hard.

Fox is averaging 30.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.4 steals through the first five games. Warriors star Stephen Curry is averaging 31.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 0.6 steals.

Usual starters

The Kings aren’t making any changes to their starting lineup for Game 6 against the Warriors. Fox will start with Huerter, Barnes, Murray and Sabonis. They huddled outside their locker room before taking the floor to a chorus of boos at Chase Center with a simple message: “Let’s leave it all on the floor and take this thing back to Sac.”
