Kings-Warriors: Mark Jones hits TV viewers with more vocab flexes in Game 4. ‘Look it up’

By the third quarter of a close game at Chase Center in San Francisco, the Kings’ primary play-by-play commentator for the regular season had already sprinkled in some gems.

“Davion Mitchell was in his face like acne,” Jones said late in the first quarter, as Stephen Curry made a tightly contested 3-pointer over Mitchell.

Jones and Burke also called Game 1 for ABC, a 126-123 win for the Kings from Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center.

As with Game 1, some fans on social media charged Jones with being noticeably more enthusiastic on big plays by the Kings than those of the Warriors.

But others appreciated the commentator’s eclectic lexicon and meticulous metaphors.

At one point late in the second quarter, Jones characterized Warriors guard Klay Thompson’s major injuries in recent years “debilitating (and) calamitous.” And after a chase-down block early in the second half, he said Golden State forward Andrew Wiggins possesses “the wingspan of a pterodactyl.”

Jones even sent viewers straight to the dictionary just before halftime, as he described Curry’s 3-point shooting efforts.

“Folks, look this one up: effrontery. It means brazen and brash. But when you have that kind of talent, you can pull it off.”

(Merriam-Webster, for what it’s worth, defines “effrontery” as “shameless boldness.”)
