Kingston NH hunting spot closed due to safety concerns near Sanborn Regional High School
New Hampshire Fish and Game officials are keeping a Kingston hunting spot closed for the rest of the year due to continued concerns over ammunition and a nearby high school.
The area in question is around the Powwow River that borders Great Pond, directly behind Sanborn Regional High School. Fish and Game said the area has been popular for waterfowl hunters, but when waterfowl seasons opened last year, law enforcement determined that “some modern types of ammunition used for waterfowling travel further than those used in the past, which could pose a risk to public safety in the area.”
In a statement this week, Col. Kevin Jordan, chief of the Law Enforcement Division at Fish and Game, said, “Out of an abundance of caution and because this section of migratory bird habitat is located directly behind Sanborn Regional High School and adjacent to a residential area, we decided last year to take action and close the area to all hunting until further notice.”
Fish and Game has emergency powers under state law to declare hunting closures. This particular closure starts where a bridge crosses the Powwow River and the marsh area on Ball Road, to where the Powwow River drains into Great Pond. The closure does not include Great Pond itself.
