Kinston police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run.

An early morning hit-and-run in Kinston left a pedestrian dead, and the search is underway for the vehicle that left the scene.

According to a release from the Kinston Police Department, at approximately 2:06 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Thompson Street in reference to a person being hit by a vehicle.

Police found a dead woman in the street when they arrived.

The car that struck her fled the scene and police do not currently have information in regards to the car at this time. The case is currently under investigation, according to the release.

The identity of the woman has not been released, and Interim Kinston Police Department Chief Jenee Spencer said she cannot comment on the incident at this time. Officer David Culbreth will be the investigator.
