KIRO 7 and Cox Media Group join media coalition asking for answers after Uvalde school shooting

KIRO 7 and our parent company, Cox Media Group, have now joined forces with a coalition of local and national journalists and media companies to try to get answers regarding last month’s mass shooting inside a Texas elementary school.

On Tuesday, May 24, the deadliest school shooting in Texas history occurred in the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

Nineteen students and two teachers were killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School, which happened as police officers waited outside in the hallway, and outside the building, for more than an hour.

The media coalition has sent a letter to the mayor of Uvalde, offering support for the people of his city in their search for answers.

“We join you in calling for a full accounting of the tragic events at Robb Elementary,” the letter reads. “The victims and their families deserve an accurate and complete picture about what occurred that day.”

Numerous records requests from journalists in Texas and across the nation have gone unanswered. The letter urges the mayor to help ensure that all the facts about this incident come to light.

“The victims and their families, the citizens of Uvalde, and the rest of the nation deserve an accurate and complete picture of what occurred that day. That is the only way to fully learn from this tragedy and prevent events like this from happening in the future,” reads a statement from Cox Media Group. “Our intent is that our coalition will prompt the immediate disclosure of all information and records requested by journalists across the country. That transparency is critical to a full assessment of what occurred that day and is essential for the accountability the families and the community deserve.”
