Kirtland: GoFundMe page set up for injured Holden Arboretum police officer

Sep. 5—The Holden Arboretum Police Department has created a GoFundMe fundraiser to help Officer Peter Greene, who was injured in a car accident on I-90 while off duty on Aug. 28.

A vehicle came across the grass median and struck his van head-on.

"Pete has suffered severe leg injuries, other contusions/bruising from the impact and a concussion with related complications," the GoFundMe page states. "Pete has a long recovery ahead. The HAPD and Pete's family appreciate any support in helping with medical bills, vehicle repair expenses and other expenses the family will incur as a result of this accident.

"Pete is a valued member of HF&G and we hope our efforts with these contributions will support a speedy recovery."

Greene has been with Holden Arboretum since 2017.

Holden Arboretum Chief Sean O'Neil said Greene is an important member of the staff and the department's thoughts and well wishes are with him during his recovery.

"Our hearts are with Officer Peter (Pete) Greene and his family as he heals and begins his road to recovery. As a key part of our team at Holden, Pete works hard to make sure things run smoothly our staff and guests. His expertise in things like police radio communications, public safety, and drone operations (he's a part of the Lake County drone team) make him a valuable member of our small police department. Pete also loves being an extension of the guest experience — he's friendly and caring. The news of his accident has hit particularly hard, especially anytime you hear someone's suffered a severe brain injury. We've been in touch with his family and the doctors are confident he'll make a full recovery. All we can do now is to be there for Pete and his family and wish for his full recovery."

The arboretum formed its first police department in 1974, but it wasn't until 1999 that it was fully commissioned under Ohio law.

The role of the department is to provide services that ensure the proper stewardship of our unique natural areas and collections. The police department also oversees the safety of Holden employees, volunteers, guests and the public.

The department is led by a full-time chief and supported by two full-time and additional part-time officers.

Officers report and correct hazards, provide emergency services and first aid, conduct fire drills and mind the general physical safety of everyone on the arboretum property. Officers also represent the department at public events to help foster a good relationship with the public, including Goblins in the Garden at the Arboretum and Safety Town programs and school career days in the surrounding communities.
