Kisa and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Kisa: A blue-eyed beauty

Quite possibly a cloud in cat form, it is hard to believe Kisa doesn’t know how beautiful she is. Whether she does or not, she certainly is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside as a kind and gentle girl.

Kisa is an 11-year-old shorthair Colorpoint kitty who has a longstanding history with the Arizona Humane Society. Rescued as a sick stray in 2014, the now senior baby is hoping that another loving family finds her again and gives her the same amount of affection and care as her last one did.

Although she is perfect in our eyes, Kisa could use some help slimming down and getting to a more manageable weight for her size and age. While rotund pets are very cuddly and cute, obesity in pets can lead to many health problems that affect their quality of life.

A lover of chin scratches and hanging out with her favorite people, the blue-eyed beauty prefers to adjust at her own pace. She also believes that she is more than enough feline for anyone and would also love to be the only one in the home so she can give her new family as many kitty kisses as she possibly can throughout her golden years.

How to adopt: Interested adopters can meet kissable Kisa at the Arizona Humane Society’s South Mountain Campus in Phoenix. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt to choose one of three convenient ways to adopt based on your schedule — by appointment, walk-in or curbside (cats and critters only)!

Twilight: A sweet tabby

If you're interested in Twilight, please go to azfriends.org to fill out a consultation form.

All ready to welcome in fall, Twilight is a pretty 6-year-old brown tabby.

Twilight was found roaming outside and brought to Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue.  Although she had been microchipped, several attempts were made to reach the call number, which was found to be disconnected. She has had a safe ending for what might have been a sad story.

It’s obvious she had a good home, as she loves people but has a total disregard for other cats. She doesn’t mind being picked up and enjoys being brushed. She also likes to sit in the volunteers’ laps which is always a plus for adopters.

How to adopt: Visit her at 11129 Michigan Avenue, Youngtown. Adoption and calling days are Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Other locations are the shelter at 10807 N. 96th Avenue, Peoria, 623-773-2246, same hours and days; Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road; and Lake Pleasant Towne Center PetsMart, 25372 Lake Pleasant Parkway, Peoria.

Dandelion: As beautiful as a flower

As delicate as the flower he is named after, Dandelion surely earned his name with his beauty as well. The handsome 2-year-old shorthair rabbit was unfortunately rescued from an ugly situation, however as he was found abandoned in a crate in an alley.

Luckily for him, Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technicians were alerted to this bun’s status and quickly made their way to rescue him. Transferred to AHS’ trauma hospital, he was found to be in good condition but spent a few weeks in a Foster Hero home to ensure he was healthy.

Finding pets in Dandelion’s position is a heartbreaking situation and AHS works hard to ensure pet owners know there are resources for them so they never have to resort to abandoning a pet, which can often have dire consequences for the animal. Those in need of help are encouraged to reach out to the Arizona Humane Society’s Pet Resource Center or find a one-stop-shop of resources at PetHousingHelpAZ.org.

How to adopt: Dandelion is a sweet bunny who was clearly cared for in his past life, well socialized and as soft as a cloud. Interested adopters can meet distinguished the Dandelion at the Arizona Humane Society’s South Mountain Campus in Phoenix. Visit azhumane.org/adopt to choose one of three convenient ways to adopt based on your schedule — by appointment, walk-in or curbside (cats and critters only)!

Munra: A fun personality

Munra is a 3-year-old, 95-pound Great Pyrenees blend.

Do you see Saint Bernard in that face?

It's possible!

Munra is a big boy, and he has a fun, silly personality. He is a strong guy and will need some leash training as he does pull some.  He loves to romp and play as well as come to you for cuddle time!

Munra came to us from the Humane Society of Yuma, where he was found with his sister. He plays well but is a big guy, and he'll do best with no small dogs. This is one nice boy!

How to adopt: He's living at Friends for Life's adoption center, located at 952 W. Melody Avenue in Gilbert, and is ready to find his forever home!  Munra is neutered, licensed, microchipped, and current on vaccinations, and his adoption fee is $295. At Friends for Life, animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed. Cats are also tested for FELV/FIV. For more information on Friends for Life, Mundra, or other cats or dogs looking for homes, visit www.azfriends.org, call 480-497-8296, or visit the shelter during hours of operation and remember to drop in for their big dog-friendly event, BARKtoberfest, happening Saturday, Oct. 29 from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at their adoption center.
