Kissinger does about-face, now backing Ukraine's NATO bid
According to the 99-year-old former official, his opinion on this issue changed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"Before this war, I was opposed to membership of Ukraine in NATO because I feared that it would start exactly the process that we are seeing now,” said Kissinger.

“The idea of a neutral Ukraine under these conditions is no longer meaningful.”
At the same time, Kissinger said he is still against the elimination of Russia as an independent state to ensure global security, as this could lead to internal conflicts on its territory, "at a time when more than 15,000 nuclear weapons are stored there."
Moreover, Kissinger considers it necessary to provide Russia with the opportunity to “rejoin an international system" after the war against Ukraine is over.

Earlier, the former Secretary of State drew criticism for his ambiguous statements amid Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on since 2014.
In particular, he called for postponing the resolution of the issue of the territorial affiliation of the temporarily occupied Crimea for the sake of negotiations with the Kremlin regime.
