This Kitchen's So Smart, It Practically Cooks Dinner for You
When dreaming up a new kitchen, it’s tempting to focus on the “pretty bits”: cabinet colors, quartz-versus-natural-stone surfaces, hardware finishes. But kitchen-and-bath expert Matthew Quinn starts with what’s practical. “I obsess over saving people time—because time equals luxury,” he says.
“In this kitchen, I focused on saving steps: from the garage to the fridge, from the dishwasher to the cabinet. It all adds up.” An easy-clean Caesarstone quartz countertop is paired with a Grothouse wood surface that has a charging pad built right in (meaning no tangled cords cluttering up your kitchen). Even the right appliances can save you time: “If you have a refrigerator that really preserves your food,” he points out, “you’ll make fewer runs to the grocery store.”
A massive custom hood by Francois & Co. creates a focal point in the space, but also works to hide the necessary vent. A 48-inch Signature Kitchen Suite range makes cooking dinner a breeze and allows the at-home chef to create any meal they desire thanks to the sous vide, induction, four-burner gas stovetop, steam and convection oven—even one of the burners quickly converts to hold a wok! On the family-perching side of the island, a custom dog bed invites your best friend to lounge at the ideal spot to clean up all those lovely scraps.
Butler's Pantry
Off the kitchen, Quinn was able to play with more color, unifying the space with the chevron that's echoed in the main space. Additional tall storage in three corners of the room with pull-out drawers holds pantry items like cereals, flour, and canned vegetables. The fourth corner is a paneled Signature Kitchen Suite column refrigerator that's perfect for holding all the accoutrements for breakfast, coffee and after-school snacks. A microwave drawer is great for quickly nuking a grab-and-go meal on your way out the door.
To make sure this smaller space didn't feel too tight, Quinn used open shelving on one wall, flanking the window and Kohler sink—and on the other side, upper cabinets have mesh inserts outfitted with Architectural Grille screens.
Breakfast Room
So many breakfast rooms take on the same design elements of the kitchen they’re associated with, essentially becoming a visual extension of that space. For Nashville-based three-person design team, Modern Remains, this room was going to have an identity of its own. “Being connected to so many spaces: the outdoor room, kitchen and living room, meant we could not go crazy with wallpaper,” says designer Evan Millard, “So instead, we commissioned art from Southern artists to help give our space energy.” A trio of abstract panels was inspired by parrot tulips and layered with an unexpected homage to the great ladies of country music, all silhouetted in black and white. “If people are starting their day here, they’ll feel great when they head out the door,” he says.
