Celebration: Veterans Week | Nov. 4-13

Annual celebration of military veterans from Dare County and beyond. Events held from Corolla to Hatteras. Country/rock band Carolina Brothers kicks off week with performance at Dare Arts Council stage Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., part of First Friday. Events include free concert at Jack Brown’s in KDH with Trick Fly on Nov. 11, Veterans Writing Workshop Nov. 12 and 13 at Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, led by vet and writer Byron Reiger from New Orleans.

Outdoors: Nature Tour | Nov. 5

Guided open-air tram tour of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Departs from Creef Cut Trail parking lot off Route 64. Visitors taken to some of best wildlife and bird-watching spots in park. Visitors encouraged to bring camera, binoculars, seat cushion or towel for seating, water, drinks, snacks, bug spray, comfortable shoes. 9-11 a.m. Tickets $10 adults, free for kids under 12 accompanied by adult. Sports: Pickleball | Nov. 5-6

OBX Pickleball tournament first weekend of November, indoors at Dare County Recreation Center in Kill Devil Hills. Men’s and women’s doubles Saturday, mixed doubles Sunday. Sports: Outer Banks Marathon | Nov. 11-13

Outer Banks Marathon weekend brings dozens of runners from all over the region. Marathon and half-marathon will be held Sunday. 5K, 8K and Fun Run held Saturday. Marathon and half-marathon courses begin at Nags Head Outlets and include stretches along Jockey’s Ridge, the Nature Conservancy, Albemarle Sound and eventually finish at Wright Brothers Memorial. Friday 1-7 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. packet pick-up, late registration and expo at Ramada Inn in Kill Devil Hills. Races begin 7:30 a.m. Saturday, 7 a.m. Sunday.

Outdoors: Chicamacomico Life Saving Station | Nov. 22, 25

Historic life-saving station Surf team will perform Breeches Buoy Reenactment Drill on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. Regular admission required. The day after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus will come to the station on a local fire engine at 1 p.m. and see children until 3 p.m. Cider and cookies provided, and kids will be given gift bag with T-shirt.
