PORT ORCHARD — A Kitsap Transit bus drove off of Bay Street and onto the Bay Street Pedestrian Path on Wednesday evening, damaging 11 vehicles as it plowed through the Port Orchard Ford dealership.

The driver, who was believed to have suffered a medical emergency, was taken to the hospital, according to Port Orchard Police Chief Matt Brown. There was no one else aboard the bus.

According to Kitsap Transit spokesman Sanjay Bhatt, the driver was recently treated and released from the hospital. Kitsap Transit is still reviewing the incident.

The bus was stopped from plunging into Sinclar Inlet by a fence on the pathway. The incident damaged the path.

The incident was reported at 6:34 p.m., according to 911 records posted on the app PulsePoint.

"There was a fairly significant" amount of damage to the stock of the Ford dealership, Brown said.

Brown said the inertia of the bus caused it to travel farther than a smaller-sized vehicle.

"Since it's a bus, it had more energy," Brown said.

Brown said the department would release additional information as it became available.

"We don't suspect anything criminal," Brown said, adding that Port Orchard Police would continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
