ADRIAN — Helping clean up the Kiwanis Trail for Earth Day, the Legacy Arbor service group of Gleaner Life Insurance Society led a litter removal project April 22, according to a news release from Gleaner.

More than two dozen volunteers focused on eight areas, including where the trail passes through Riverside and Trestle parks, south of West Valley Road, between West Maumee Street and West Maple Avenue as well as the area near South Main Street.

With supplies from the Adrian Parks and Forestry Department, more than two dozen large bags of trash were collected and disposed of, along with broken items including toys, chairs and a shopping cart.

Legacy Arbor treated volunteers to taco lunches. It also donated 21 remaining lunches, sanitizer wipes and sanitizer gel to the Share the Warmth homeless shelter.

The Gleaner project coincided with the 10th annual observance of “Celebrate Trails Day” — started by the Rails to Trails Conservancy in 2013 — as well as the upcoming grand opening of the trail’s new extension to Cal Zorn Park in Tecumseh.

Activities including a 5K run/walk fundraiser are planned for May 20. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Cal Zorn Park at the corner of Raisin Center and Russell roads in Tecumseh. Each municipality that makes up the trail authority — Adrian city and township, Raisin Township and Tecumseh city — has a link on its website where participants can register online or download a paper copy to drop off or mail in. The deadline to sign up and get a T-shirt is May 5.

The cost per person is $30. Children 12 and younger are free. The cost for a child's shirt is $15. Same-day registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. The course will close at 10:30 am. Healthy snacks and water will be provided.
