Kleberg Bank's Gabe Guerra sworn-in as newest Port of Corpus Christi commissioner

The Port of Corpus Christi's newest commissioner is officially sworn-in.

Gabe Guerra, CEO and president of Kleberg Bank, was chosen by the City Council in December to represent Corpus Christi on the seven-member board.

Sworn in Thursday, he replaces Rick Valls, who had served on the commission since December 2013.

Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales, also a former port commissioner, administered the oath of office, according to a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Some of the region’s biggest decisions come from the dais of the agency’s board.

Commissioners oversee the port's infrastructure investment, broadscale policies and budget.

About 20 people had applied for Valls’ seat on the board.

Also sworn-in Thursday was Wes Hoskins, CEO of First Community Bank, who was appointed to his third term on the commission by San Patricio County.

The board comprises representatives from three political subdivisions. One is appointed by San Patricio County commissioners, three are appointed by the Corpus Christi City Council and three are appointed by Nueces County commissioners.

Commissioners serve three-year terms, with a maximum of four terms. The positions aren’t paid.

In a news release issued Thursday afternoon, port CEO Sean Strawbridge wrote that Guerra’s “vast community leadership and business experience in the South Texas Coastal Bend is well known.”

“His business acumen and past board memberships will undoubtedly serve him well as a Port of Corpus Christi Commissioner,” he wrote.
