Knack for style leads another young Wichita entrepreneur to open custom streetwear store

Since Mark Lozada has already moved his YBG Studios out of the Garages incubator space at Revolutsia after just a few months, it created a new opportunity for another young streetwear creator.

Danny Sun’s Dummy Apparel is now in the space, which is on Central a few blocks east of Grove.

“We sell custom original designs,” Sun said. “Our main focus is . . . we make everything in house.”

That might be tie-dyed clothing or apparel made with screen printing — anything where Sun can add his own flair.

“I always had a knack for . . . style,” he said. “I feel like I’ve always been out there, but not in a bad way.”

He said that means his style isn’t in step with the masses, which he considers a good thing.

A lot of Sun’s styles have kind of an earthy base. He likes playing with creatures such as snails and beetles in new ways. For instance, he has a shirt featuring a snail with flowers popping out of it.

Sun said his customers are the kind of people who appreciate art.

“People that . . . want to make a statement with their clothes.”

He said his clothing is for people who want to make subtle statements and “don’t want to scream in your face about it.”

This spring, Sun said he wants to have classes outside at Revolutsia to teach others how to tie-dye and do screen printing.

He said the idea is to bring people together “and just all vibe together.”

Sun said he’d like to create custom stickers and other custom merchandise as well.

“I’ve been doing this about four years,” he said.

During those years, Sun said people kept telling him to get his own space. The Garages gave him that opportunity, and he said he thinks he’ll know when it’s time to graduate to larger space.

“I’m just kind of going with the flow.”

There are a couple of reasons Sun named his business Dummy Apparel.

One is that dummy is another name for mannequin, and Sun said the people who wear his styles are “like walking mannequins.”

Also, he said some people called him dumb for starting his own apparel line and said it wouldn’t work.

“It’s kind of like an ode to that. You’re the dummy, not me,” Sun said.

“I have something completely different to bring to the table.”
