'Knew they had a fanbase, but wow:' Nashville eyed for Tennessee's first Wawa location

Nashville is being considered as the potential site for Tennessee's first Wawa convenience store.

The company has put together a preliminary proposal for a location in Bellevue as part of it's plans to open several Tennessee storefronts in the next several years. According to the expansion announcement, originally released in June 2022, Wawa plans to open up to 40 store locations in the Nashville area.

District 35 Metro Council Member Dave Rosenberg let his constituents know about the proposal with a Facebook post on April 8. Rosenberg asked for feedback on the plan. Support had flooded in from almost 200 commenters as of Wednesday, April 12.

"I was pretty blown away by the enthusiasm," Rosenberg said. "A number of the people have personal experience with [Wawa]. I knew they had a fanbase, but wow."

The proposal for the potential Bellevue location would land the cult-favorite convenience store and gas station across the street from the Highway 100 Tire Discounters, near the intersection of Temple Road and Highway 100.

The property would need to be rezoned for a convenience store, which was part of the reason Rosenberg said he wanted to hear feedback from the community early on.

The site was recently rezoned for a specific set of commercial uses, including a small day care, financial institution, general office, outpatient clinic, veterinary clinic, ATM, small brewery, restaurant or green space.

Because there was positive feedback at this stage, Rosenberg said he expects the company to file for a rezoning in the coming weeks. That rezoning request will make its way through Metro Planning Commission and Metro Council before the development can move forward.

A representative from the company did not immediately respond to request for comment. The Pennsylvania-based company also has locations in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C.

The first Tennessee Wawa stores were not originally targeted for opening until 2025, so residents still have a while to go before grabbing a hoagie in Bellevue.
