Can the ‘Knightmare’ help Lake Norman Charter past East Lincoln? Friday’s games, schedule
East Lincoln (13-4, 5-2 South Fork) at Lake Norman Charter (12-4, 7-0), 7:30 (Observer game of the week): East Lincoln is in a three-way tie with North Lincoln (10-5, 5-2) and Newton-Conover (11-6, 5-2) for second place in a tight race. Lake Norman Charter has won nine straight games led by sophomore Donovan Atwell (18.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.1 apg). Expect a sellout and the Knights’ student section, aka “The Knighmare,” to be in full throat.
West Charlotte (10-6, 4-3 I-MECK) at Lake Norman (11-6, 4-3), 7:30: These two are tied with Hough (12-5, 4-3) for third place in a tight playoff race. West Charlotte sophomore Marcus “Snoop” Magness (17.1 ppg, 7.0 apg, 5.9 apg) is having a breakout season.
No. 1 Mallard Creek (15-1, 6-1 I-MECK) at No. 4 Vance girls (13-4, 5-2 I-MECK), 6: Vance, which has won four straight games, is tied with North Meck (12-4, 5-2) for second place. Both teams are one game behind Mallard Creek. Mallard Creek has won eight straight games and looks for the season sweep against its rival. Mallard Creek beat Vance 61-58 Dec. 10.
Ardrey Kell girls (10-7, 4-2) at No. 11 South Mecklenburg (12-3, 4-2), 6: The teams are tied with Olympic (11-4, 4-2) for second place behind Providence (15-2, 6-0). Friday is also Dave Price Night, as the school will honor its former state championship boys coach. Naismith hall of famer Bobby Jones will speak and several former members of Price’s teams are expected. The school hopes to rename its court for Price.
Independence girls (13-4, 5-2) at Hickory Ridge (8-8, 3-3), 6: It’s the eighth annual “Be The Match Night” at Hickory Ridge in memory of Todd Kevin Rose, brother of Hickory Ridge girls coach Tolonda Rose-Simmons. Todd Rose was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010 and died from the disease two years later. The school will be recruiting possible bone marrow donors for the national Be The Match Registry from 4 to 8 p.m. Hendrick Automotive, where Todd Rose worked, donated special T-shirts and coaches shirts for the event.
