Knights of Columbus in New Bern is holding their annual yard sale that will run through Friday.

Just in case you hadn’t heard, the Knights of Columbus Winter Yard Sale will be held this Thurs thru Saturday from 8 a.m. through Noon at the hall located at 1125 Pine Tree Drive in New Bern. Most people in the community are familiar with the sales as they have been an event held in New Bern for almost half a century!!

To be precise, for the past 45+ years, the Knights of Columbus in New Bern have been conducting yard sales to generate revenue in support the organization and the 35+ Charities to which it donates every year.

An event that started out back in March of 1978 and operated out of several trailers along Trent Road moved several times to different locations within New Bern, conducting two sales per year until the Knights bought their current property on Pine Tree Drive in 1994. From that point forward, they have operated from this location. Never could the original 19 members of the K of C who started the activity imagined that it would grow into the year-round operation that it is today.

Although it was initially operated in the large hall within the main building, the growth of the Yard Sale donations and the activity over the years necessitated the addition of a dedicated Yard Sale building and a storage building with several storage cans. This is where the volunteers work tirelessly during every week of the year, picking up donations and sorting the items that are either dropped off or picked up by their crew on Monday and Tuesday mornings. All in anticipation of the 3 sales that they now hold each year.

K of C Assembly 1820, which operates the sale is fortunate to have established a solid relationship with our local military bases (Cherry Point and New River) who normally provide volunteers that help setup, operate, and break down the sales. An absolute necessity with our inventory of heavy furniture and the average age of the Assembly members.

In keeping with the Knights of Columbus founding principal of Charity, the proceeds of the sale help the Assembly to fund more than $50,000 in donations each year to a group of local and national charities, which include: St Paul’s CC & School, RCS, Boys & Girls Clubs & Homes, Promise Place, FF Habour Hospital Auxiliary, Craven County Partners in Education, Fund for Needy Children, New Bern Senior Center, MS, YMCA, Red Cross, St Jude’s and a number of veterans charities.

If you are looking for something to do this week, given the bleak weather forecast and the time of year, stop on over to the sale and take a look at the donated items that they have for sale! It is really quite an experience!!
