She worked in Philadelphia, Florida and Ecuador before moving to Greenville in 2000 – when the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor passed their legacy to the Sisters of Bon Secours.

“She always led with such a faith-filled heart, and her compassion for God’s children was unwavering,” said Lee Palms, the director of the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System Board of Directors who served with Sister Dorothy for 12 years on the St. Francis Foundation Board.

Most recently, Sister Dorothy was a chaplain at the Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center.

“Most people are very happy to have someone to talk to. I’m touched by people’s faith and endurance in getting through difficult situations,” said Sister Dorothy. “My ministry here is one of presence – being there to listen. It’s not much about saying anything. It’s about being supportive, sensitive, and listening – sometimes to the things that aren’t being said.”

A plaque commemorating her service will be displayed at the St. Francis Cancer Center. Additionally, the St. Francis Foundation has asked for donations in her name to fund the Oncology Patient Assistance Fund.

Raised in Greenville, Williams settled with her husband, Don, in Atlanta. She received three years of tutelage in portrait and figure painting from the Russian masters Constantin and Roman Chatov.

After a decade as a portrait artist, Williams turned her attention to painting interiors, still life, and garden scenes. A five-year stint in England and Paris and trips throughout Europe allowed Williams to immerse herself in museums and art.

She expanded her subject matter to landscapes, colorful village rooftops, bustling streets, and harbor scenes, and mastered a Post-Impressionist style. The Williamses spend much of their time now in the Provence region of France.

“A Good Year” will be open to the public for viewing and purchase in conjunction with the workshop where Williams will teach from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Greenville Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 Abney Street. A second workshop will be held in Atlanta.
