Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 WA track and field state championships

2023 WIAA STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

May 25-27

Class 4A/3A/2A at Mount Tahoma High School, Tacoma

Class 1A/2B/1B at Eisenhower High School, Yakima

Schedule

4A/3A/2A: Thursday — Field events begin at 3 p.m. Track events begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday — Field events begin at 9 a.m. Track events begin at 11 a.m. Saturday — Both field and track events begin at 10:30 a.m.

1A/2B/1B: Thursday — Both field and track events begin at 4 p.m. Friday — Both field and track events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday — Field events begin at 9:45 a.m. Track events begin at 9:30 a.m.

Tickets

Single day — $7 adults, $5 students/seniors/military for Thursday and $11/8 for Friday and Saturday. Full tournament — $25 adults, $19 students/seniors/military. Tickets can be purchased online through the WIAA website.

State preview

The 4A/3A/2A track and field state championships return to Tacoma this spring, while the 1A/2B/1B championships move to Yakima after being previously hosted at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Here’s a look at some of the top athletes to watch for at both sites this weekend (times, distances and heights listed are season-bests, as recorded on athletic.net).

4A — Emerald Ridge’s JaiCieonna Gero-Holt won three individual state titles in her debut season last spring in the 100 hurdles, high jump and long jump, and reached the podium a fourth time in the javelin, placing seventh. This weekend, the Jaguars’ sophomore sensation will look to add to that total. Gero-Holt leads the state in the 100 hurdles (14.44), javelin (138-7) and high jump (5-11 3/4, which is also currently fourth in the nation) this spring, and ranks second in the long jump (18-9 3/4). … Federal Way junior Cassandra Atkins is the defending 4A champion in the triple jump, leads the state this spring in both the long jump (20-0 3/4, which is 12th in the nation) and triple jump (41-2 1/2, 20th in the nation) and also runs a leg of the Eagles’ top-ranked 4x100 relay (48.41). Atkins is also in the field in the 200 (25.08), and has the No. 4 time in 4A in that event this season. … Two more Federal Way standouts, seniors Jaylon Jenkins and Roman Hutchinson — also stars in the secondary for the Eagles — enter the weekend as state leaders. Jenkins, an Eastern Washington football signee, leads the state in the high jump (6-10) and 4A in the triple jump (47-4 1/4). Hutchinson is the state leader in the long jump (24-3). … Tahoma senior sprinter Brooke Lyons leads 4A in the 100 (11.59), 200 (24.71) and 400 (55.01), and is the overall state leader in the 100 and 400. Lyons in the defending 4A champion in the 200. … Skyline junior Rebecca O’Keefe is the state leader in the 800 (2:10.08) and 1,600 (4:41.37, fifth in the nation), and ranks second statewide in the 3,200 (10:22.3). … Bothell senior Haedyn Bambolo is the defending 4A champion in the shot put, and leads the state in the event this spring with a 48-7, which is also tied for eighth in the nation. Bambolo also enters the weekend as the top-ranked thrower in 4A in the discus (136-6).

3A — Capital senior Hana Moll set the national outdoor record in the pole vault (15-0) in April at the Arcadia Invitational in California, and continues to lead the nation in the event heading into this weekend’s state meet. Twin sister Amanda Moll ranks second in the nation this spring in the outdoor event (14-7 1/4), cleared 15-1 1/2 during an indoor competition earlier this year and won last season’s 3A title, resetting the meet record (14-6), but is not in the field in the event this weekend. Bainbridge junior Ella McRitchie is also nationally-ranked in the event this spring, tied for seventh after jumping 14-0 last week. … Central Kitsap senior Roderick Schenk leads the state in the javelin (203-11), and ranks eighth in the nation in the event this spring, but another 3A SSC thrower in Yelm junior Brayden Platt (189-7) is also a contender, having surpassed 200 feet last summer. The top four javelin throws in the state this season have been recorded by competitors in the 3A boys field, with Cleveland’s Max Berger (185-2) and Mead’s Evan Berg (183-8 1/4) also besting 180 feet. Platt, Washington’s top football recruit in the 2024 class per 247Sports rankings, is also the defending 3A champion in the shot put, and leads the state in that event again this season after tossing a state-leading 63-11 3/4 last week, which also ranks 18th in the nation. He is also the state’s top-ranked thrower in the discus (174-9) this spring. … Yelm senior Trevontay Smith is the defending 3A champion in the triple jump, and leads the state again this spring with a distance of 49-8, which also ranks 12th in the nation. … Seattle Prep senior sprinter Tyler Floyd is the defending state champion in the 100, 200 and 400 — and ranked 10th nationally this spring in the 400 (46.3) — but is not in the field this weekend due to injury. … Bellevue junior Alex Buck won 3A titles in the 100 and 200 last season, and returns to defend those titles. Bishop Blanchet senior William Schneider returns to the field in the 1,600 and 3,200 after winning both events in 2022.

2A — Squalicum’s Andre Korbmacher won a pair of individual titles last season, setting meet records in both the 110 hurdles (13.83) and 300 hurdles (36.3), and added two more podium finishes running relays for the Storm — who won the 4x100 and placed second in the 4x400. The Florida State-bound senior is set to compete individually in the 110 hurdles again this spring in Tacoma — he returned from injury in late April — while Squalicum’s two relay teams have also qualified again. Korbmacher joins Capital pole vaulter Hana Moll as one of two competitors at Mount Tahoma this weekend who have recorded an all-time record in Washington during their high school careers in an individual event, posting a state-best 13.44 in the 110 hurdles in 2022. … Sehome’s Jacob Andrews returns to defend individual 2A championships in the 200 and 400. The senior sprinter set the meet record in the 200 last season (21.25) and leads the state in both the 200 (21.05) and 400 (46.3, which also ranks tied for 10th in the nation) this spring. Andrews is also the top-ranked sprinter in 2A in the 100 (10.47), and second-ranked in the state overall. … Bellingham junior Chayse Flick-Williams won both the 100 and long jump last spring, and leads 2A in both events again this spring.

1A/2B/1B — Bear Creek junior Braelyn Baker swept her four individual events last spring, winning 1A state titles in the 100, 200, 300 hurdles and long jump. Baker leads the state in the 200 (23.61) and 300 hurdles (42.6) this spring. She also ranks second statewide in the 100 (11.65) and 400 (55.2) — though she is not competing in the 400 in Yakima — both just behind Tahoma’s Brooke Lyons. Baker ranks third statewide in the long jump (18-8 1/4). … Seattle Academy junior Reggie Witherspoon III is the defending 1A champion in the 100 and 200, and ranks in the top 10 statewide in both events this spring. … Bush senior Amare Fields leads state in the 800 (1:52.39) this season. … King’s senior Adrianna Coleman leads state in discus (148-4), while DeSales senior Morgan Thomas, the defending 1B champion in the event, is second statewide (139-7). … Mary Walker junior Tomeko Cates is the defending 1B champion in the high jump and triple jump, and ranks tied for second statewide this spring in the high jump (6-8).
