Toughest weight classes

During Tuesday’s seeding meeting, the 126 weight class was skipped over the first time around and for good reason – it was a crazy bracket to construct. As many as seven wrestlers have a legitimate shot at a title including locals Jackson Young (Camden Catholic) and Nathan Taylor (Kingsway).

At 120, the bracket contains three state champions with St. John Vianney’s Anthony Knox, Delbarton’s Daniel Jones and DePaul’s Adrian DeJesus. While Knox is considered the odds-on favorite, don’t count either of the locals, Max Elton (Holy Spirit) and Sammy Spaulding (Camden Catholic), out for making a run to the title bout.

At 144, a loaded field includes state runner-up Julian George (Christian Brothers Academy) as the top seed but includes a stacked top half of the bracket that includes South Jersey’s strongest contingent: St. Augustine’s Richie Grungo (fourth seed), Delsea’s Jamar Dixon Jr. (fifth) and Gloucester City’s Jacob Zearfoss (ninth).

At 150, you know it’s a deep field when Delran’s Drew Roskos is a ninth seed. Keep an eye out for a Roskos-Matt Henrich rematch in the quarterfinals. Henrich beat Roskos 4-3 in UTB in last week’s Region 7 final. St. Augustine’s Brady Conlin is the third seed. He is looking to place for the third time with a third different program after spending last year in Florida.

At 175, two state champions lead the field with Delbarton’s Simon Ruiz and Brick Memorial’s Harvey Ludington along with undefeated Sabino Portella, of Red Bank Catholic, and state runner-up Jared Schoppe, of Delsea.

At 106, how tough is this weight class? Southern’s Anthony Mason, a Region 7 champ, is the 15th seed.

What’s in a seed?

1

St. Augustine’s Kaden Naame (113) is South Jersey’s lone top seed in the tournament. South Jersey had two No. 1 seeds in each of the last three tournaments, each going 1-1. Camden Catholic’s Martin Cosgrove, Williamstown’s Mike Misita and Collingswood’s Andrew Clark were the champions.

2

Only one No. 2 seed won a state title last season.

9

Top-seeded wrestlers who claimed state titles in last year’s tournament.
