What you need to know about Election Day in Mohawk Valley

Tuesday is Election Day and area voters will choose officials to serve in counties, cities and towns.

Ballots in Oneida County will include races for a state Supreme Court justice for the Fifth District, county executive, district attorney, county comptroller and county legislators as well as city, town and Village of Boonville officials. In Herkimer County, voters will choose county legislators, the sheriff and a coroner as well as officials in towns and the City of Little Falls.

Only one candidate is running in many of the races.

When are polls open?

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What are some of the more prominent contested races?

  • Jean Marie Westlake (Republican/Conservative), Peter Rayhill (Republican/Conservative) and Bob Cohen (Working Families) are facing off for two seats as justices on the state Supreme Court in the Fifth Judicial District.

  • Michael Hennessy (TermLimitTaxCut) is challenging incumbent Anthony Picente Jr. (Republican) for the position of Oneida County executive. Hennessy previously ran against Picente in 2019 as a Democrat.

  • William Maxim (Democrat) and incumbent Steven Boucher (Republican/Conservative) are running for the Oneida County Legislature in District 6.

  • Crystal Faria (Democrat/Working Families) and incumbent George Joseph (Republican) are running for the county legislature in District 10.

  • James Herchek (CutTaxesFirst) is challenging incumbent Brenda McMonagle for the District 12 seat in the county legislature.

  • Incumbent Caroline Reale (Democrat/Working Families) and James Messa (Republican/Conservative) are facing off for the District 15 seat in the county legislature.

  • Incumbent Anthony Myers (Republican/Conservative) faces a challenge from Lori Washburn (Democrat) in the 21st county legislative district.

  • Utica Common Council President Mike Galime (Republican), Councilwoman Celeste Friend (Democrat/Working Families) and school board member Robert Cardillo (Conservative) are all vying to become the next mayor of Utica. Incumbent Mayor Robert Palmieri cannot run again, having served three terms.

  • Carmen Bossone Jr. (Democrat) and Rocco Giruzzi (Republican UticaForward) are running for president of the Utica Common Council.

  • In Utica, four candidates are vying for three council-at-large seats: Julie Gederos (Democrat/Working Families), Jack LoMedico (Democrat), incumbent Samantha Colosimo-Testa (Republican UticaForward/Conservative) and incumbent Mark Williamson (Republican UticaForward/Conservative).

  • In Rome, incumbent John Gannon (Democrat/Conservative) and Stephanie Viscelli (Republican/JusticeinRome) are running for city court judge.

  • Former detective Jeffrey Lanigan (Republican/Right for Rome) is challenging incumbent Jacqueline Izzo (Conservative) to become the next mayor of Rome.  Lanigan beat Izzo in the Repubican primary, but Izzo has received endorsements from the county Republican, Conservative and Democratic committees.

What are noteworthy uncontested races?

Todd Carville (Republican/Conservative) is running unopposed to become the next Oneida County district attorney. And Enessa Carbone (Republican/Conservative) is running unopposed to become the next county comptroller.

Both will replace long-term incumbents. Scott McNamara is retiring after having served as district attorney since 2008 and as an assistant DA for 14.5 years before that.

And Joseph Timpano, the longest-serving comptroller in Oneida County history, is retiring after 25 years in office.
