What we know about the fatal crash involving a school bus in Laurel Monday afternoon

A school bus and another vehicle collided in a fatal crash at Hardscrabble Road at East Trap Pond Road near Laurel on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, Delaware State Police said.

A crash involving a car and a school bus of children left the driver of the car dead and 13 students injured in Laurel on Monday afternoon, according to Delaware State Police.

Here's what we know about the incident.

Where did the crash occur?

The wreck happened at Hardscrabble and East Trap Pond roads around 3:45 p.m., according to Delaware State Police. The agency announced just after 4 p.m. that roadways would be closed for an extended period of time and advised drivers to avoid the area.

What happened?

According to police, the 21-year-old driver of the car, Taylor Maurer, ran a stop sign and "proceeded directly into the path of the school bus."

The bus driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting the car, but he was unable to and hit the passenger side of the car. This caused the car to flip and the bus to overturn on nearby grass. Photos and video from the scene showed it on its side surrounded by first responders.

The car could be seen in the grass nearby.

Photos from the scene showed tarps covering the car, as well as the bus missing its front windshield. Two safety hatches on top of the bus, which are built to allow passengers to escape, were open.

Were children on the school bus injured?

Emergency communications indicate one student was trapped in the bus and had to be extracted by firefighters. In total, 13 students were injured, 12 of whom suffered non life-threatening injuries. One students was airlifted to the hospital and was listed in "serious" condition. The others were released from the hospital.

Just before 6 p.m., Delaware State Police still could be seen investigating at the scene of the crash.

What school was the school bus affiliated with?

In a Facebook post around 6:30 p.m. Monday night, Sussex Montessori School shared that it was aware of the crash and had been in touch with the hospital, school leaders and staff present with children and families.

The school community would have additional mental health resources provided and share new information with parents as it becomes available, the school said in the post.

Was anyone else involved?

No other cars were involved in the wreck. The school bus driver also was injured, however, and treated at a local hospital. She was released later.

Police said the driver of the car was not wearing his seatbelt.
