What to know about Garden Jubilee, stream cleanup event

For the 31st year of one of the largest gardening shows in Western North Carolina, there will be a big change behind the scenes.

The annual Garden Jubilee, which has been conducted through the years by the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority, will be managed this year by the Friends of Downtown Hendersonville. The event is set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Memorial Day weekend (May 27-28).

Friends of Downtown Hendersonville host several events downtown, including Rhythm & Brews, the Bearfootin' Art Walk (happening on May 10) and the Hendersonville Farmers Market.

According to a news release, for the Garden Jubilee, there will be more than 200 plant and craft vendors lining Main Street. There will be local and regional nurseries, orchards and crafters, who will offer a wide variety of plants andhandmade delights, the release said.

Gardening experts will be on hand to share the latest gardening tips and techniques. This will be the second year in a row that the event has been on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville. In 2020 and 2021, the event was altered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Friends of Downtown Hendersonville is estimating an attendance this year of 200,000. There are still opportunities to be a Garden Jubilee sponsor, with several sponsorship levels available. Friends of Downtown Hendersonville said in the release that it will make sponsorship packages that are most beneficial to each individual sponsor.

Stream cleanup event set for June

The City of Hendersonville Stormwater Division will be leading the Stream Cleanup event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 3. During this event, a team of volunteers and City of Hendersonville staff will float down Mud Creek between North Main Street and Balfour Road, cleaning up trash.

“Joining Hendersonville’s Stream Clean-Up Event is a great way to be a part of keeping our waterways clean and healthy in just a few hours,” said Hendersonville’s Stormwater Division Manager Michael Huffman in a news release. “During past events, volunteers have removed thousands of pounds of trash from local streams.”

Event participants will be removing trash from the stream and the city of Hendersonville will collect and dispose of the trash following the clean-up. The city of Hendersonville’s Stormwater Division can provide canoes for eight people but encourages anyone who has their own canoe or kayak to register and join the event.

Attendees should wear outdoor attire that can get muddy and close-toed shoes.

All volunteers will need to register online before the event at https://bit.ly/44iwydP or by visiting the city of Hendersonville website. The meeting location and additional information are available on the registration form.
