Jun. 18—Now would be a good time to learn about Jacoby Brissett. Unlike U.S. vice presidents, who are unseen and unheard when things are going well, the Browns backup quarterback always has had an important role.

Brissett hasn't met with the media since his introductory news conference April 20. Throughout spring practices and minicamp, he had to be content with taking what seemed like less than 30 percent of the snaps while Deshaun Watson got most of the work. That would not be unusual if Watson weren't facing a lengthy suspension by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy in connection with the 24 lawsuits filed against him alleging sexual misconduct.

"I do have confidence in Jacoby," Coach Kevin Stefanski said after a recent minicamp practice. "He's played a lot of football for a young player. He's a smart player. He takes care of the football. Good size, can make all of the throws and those types of things.

"He's been in multiple offenses. Our offense is a little bit different than what he's done previously. But he has a really, really good understanding of football — football intelligence that is — so I just think he's a really good operator."

Brissett is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds. Watson, just to compare, is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. Watson is 28-25 as a starter, all with the Texans.

Brissett played with the Patriots, Colts and Dolphins before signing a one-year contract with the Browns on March 25. He played in three games with the Patriots, 46 with the Colts and 11 with the Dolphins. He is 14-23 as a starter. To Stefanski's point about taking care of the ball, Brissett has thrown 36 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions.

Brissett said he and Watson have similar playing styles.

"I think we do a lot of the same things," he said. "Obviously, he's way faster than me. I'm not afraid to say that, but I think this offense suits us well in that room. The coaches tried to put us in the best position possible and play to the strengths of whoever is playing."

Brissett was in his third season with the Colts during training camp in the summer of 2019, getting a handful of snaps while Andrew Luck got most of the work. Out of the blue, Luck decided to retire on Aug. 24, 2019, and suddenly, Brissett was the starting quarterback with the season opener less than three weeks into the future.

Brissett might be in a similar situation here, depending on when the league announces a decision on Watson.

"He's had some interesting experiences in his young career — just through New England and what happened in Indianapolis with Andrew Luck retiring. So he certainly has had an action-packed or ton of experiences packed into that short career," Stefanski said.

The experience with the Colts has prepared Brissett for what he is going through now. Stefanski said he will adjust the workload for his quarterbacks when the league makes a decision on Watson.

Brissett will work as the starter in camp if the league makes a decision before training camp starts July 27. If not, Brissett is confident he will be ready to start without a majority of practice snaps.

"That's not my place to try to predict that and I wouldn't be in the position that I'm in today if I worried about things like that," Brissett said. "I've always prepared myself like a starter. I carry myself like a starter because when those opportunities present themselves, I want to show that I'm that. And obviously I'm here to support the room — Deshaun and Josh."

Josh Dobbs is the third quarterback. The 2017 fourth-round draft pick of the Steelers played in five games in 2018 and one in 2020 with the Steelers. He has thrown 17 career passes with 10 completions and one interception.

If the Browns make a move, assuming Watson is suspended, it likely will be to add an experienced backup quarerback behind Brissett.
