We know Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban, but how many millionaires does Dallas-Fort Worth have?

Dallas-Fort Worth was the 18th wealthiest city in the world in 2022, according to a report by Henley & Partners on the world’s top 20 wealthiest cities.

Six American cities made the list, two of them in Texas — DFW and Houston, which was ranked eighth. New York ranked first, San Francisco third, Los Angeles and Malibu sixth and Chicago seventh. In the U.S., the top five richest cities were New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Malibu, Chicago and Houston.

In 2022, Dallas-Fort Worth had 92,300 high-net-worth individuals, an increase of 3% over 2021. These are individuals with investable assets of $1 million or more. It also had 4,340 multi-millionaires ($10 million or more), 211 centi-millionaires ($100 million or more) and 18 billionaires ($1 billion or more). Alice Walton, Jerry Jones, Andrew Beal, Ken Fisher and David Bonderman are the richest of the metroplex’s billionaires.

“Like its Texan cousins Houston and Austin, Dallas has seen very strong wealth growth over the past two decades with many companies relocating their head offices there,” writes Andrew Amoils, head of research at wealth intelligence firm New World Wealth. “Major resident Fortune 500 companies include American Airlines, AT&T, CBRE, ExxonMobil, Southwest Airlines, and Texas Instruments.”

Houston had 132,600 high-net-worth individuals, an increase of 6% over the year before. The city had 6,590 multi-millionaires, 314 centi-millionaires and 25 billionaires. Houston’s richest billionaires are Jeffery Hildebrand, Tilman Fertitta, Richard Kinder, Randa Duncan Williams, Scott Duncan, Milane Frantz and Dannine Avara.

“Houston is one of the world’s fastest growing cities in terms of wealth growth over the past 20 years,” Amoils writes. “It is also the leading US city in a number of key sectors including aeronautics, basic materials (oil and gas), biotech, and engineering.”

The report also identified the 25 cities in the world with the fastest-growing millionaire populations in 2022. Cities in Texas and Florida made the list, with American companies increasingly moving their head offices to the states.

Austin was the standout at #8 in the world and #1 in the U.S., having 15,800 high-net-worth individuals, a 14% increase from 2021. The city had 630 multi-millionaires, 82 centi-millionaires and 11 billionaires. Elon Musk, Michael Dell, Robert F. Smith and Joe Gebbia are the richest of the city’s billionaires.

Houston, West Palm Beach, Greenwich and Miami also experienced significant millionaire growth between 2021 and 2022.
