What you know, and might not, about the 2020-21 UConn men’s roster

0 Jalen Gaffney

6-3, G, So., Columbus, N.J.

Obvious: Huskies won 9 of 12 once Gaffney broke into starting lineup.

You might not know: Gaffney’s father, A.D., is lifelong friend of assistant coach Kimani Young.

1 R.J. Cole

6-1, G, Jr., Union, N.J.

Obvious: Transfer from Howard, where he was MEAC player of the year in 2018-19.

You might not know: Cole was salutatorian of his graduating class at St Anthony’s High in Jersey City.

2 James Bouknight

6-5, G, So., Brooklyn, N.Y.

Obvious: Averaged 13 points per game, led Huskies' late-season surge, preseason All-Big East second team.

You might not know: UConn stayed in touch when Bouknight injured his knee at prep school, a big factor in landing him.

4 Tyrese Martin

6-6, G/F, Jr., Allentown, Pa.

Obvious: Transfer from URI, where he led Rams to 21-9 record last season, averaging 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds.

You might not know: After returning home in March, worked in a warehouse to help support family during pandemic.

5 Isaiah Whaley

6-9, F/C, Sr., Gastonia, N.C.

Obvious: After becoming starter, Whaley averaged 13.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.5 blocks over last six games.

You might not know: Whaley had the nickname “Pork Chop” before UConn. Acquired the nickname “Poppers” after hitting a few mid-range jumpers last year.

10 Brendan Adams

6-4, G, Jr., Baltimore

Obvious: Scored in double figures coming off the bench 12 times last season.

You might not know: Switching from Rhode Island, he became Dan Hurley’s first recruit at UConn.

11 Akok Akok

6-9, F, So., Manchester, N.H.

Obvious: Averagd 2.5 blocks, 28.1 minutes per game before rupturing Achilles in February.

You might not know: Born in Sudan, Akok moved to New Hampshire with his family as a toddler.

12 Tyler Polley

6-9, F, Sr., Miramar, Fla.

Obvious: Has shot 39.3 percent on 3-pointers during his college career.

You might not know: His father, Tommy, played in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams.

13 Richie Springs

6-9, F/C, Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.

Obvious: Sat out as an academic redshirt last season.

You might not know: Played with Bouknight at MacDuffie School.

20 Andrew Hurley

6-1, G, Fr., Glastonbury

Obvious: Coach Dan Hurley’s son, will play at UConn as preferred walk-on.

You might not know: East Catholic-Manchester was 50-2 during his two seasons on the team.

21 Adama Sanogo

6-9, F/C, Fr., Bamako, Mali

Obvious: A top-75 recruit who chose UConn over Seton Hall, Nebraska and Maryland.

You might not know: Loves to cook, and has posted some cooking videos.

25 Josh Carlton

6-11, C/F, Sr., Winterville, N.C.

Obvious: Has played in all 96 games during his three seasons, starting the last 66.

You might not know: Played at DeMatha Catholic with No. 1 draft pick Markelle Fultz.

31 Javonte Ferguson

7-0, C, Fr., Toronto

Obvious: Averaged 18.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 blocks at Thornlea School.

You might not know: First resident of Canada to play for Huskies since Denham Brown in 2006.

41 Matt Garry

6-5, G, Jr., Southington

Obvious: Saw action in six games as walk-on. Out for this season with torn ACL.

You might not know: Played at St. Paul-Bristol, was recruited by Jim Calhoun at Division III St. Joe’s.

44 Andre Jackson

6-6, G, Fr., Amsterdam, N.Y.

Obvious: Heavily recruited, chose UConn over Syracuse, averaged 18.8 points, 10.1 rebounds 5.1 assists as senior at Albany Academy.

You might not know: Jackson’s parents both played basketball at Fulton-Montgomery CC.
