What to know for the Minnesota state high school track and field meet

ST. CLOUD — With the addition of a third class to the Minnesota state track and field meet for 2022, things will look a bit different from recent years.

The meet returns to St. Michael-Albertville High School after successfully holding the two-class meet in 2021. Last year's meet was divided into timed finals for each class over two days.

After no state meet in 2020, the format returns to prelims and finals days this year, more similar to when Hamline University hosted the meet in 2019 and prior.

Select field events and the 3200m run will hold finals on different days in each class, but other events tend to follow this schedule. Doors open an hour before each session and tickets must be bought electronically.

Thursday: Class 3A prelims 9 a.m., Class A prelims 4 p.m.

Friday: Class 2A prelims 9 a.m., Class A finals 4 p.m.

Saturday: Class 2A finals 9 a.m., Class 3A finals 4 p.m.

Albany's Olivia Goebel is a key name to watch at state, beginning with the 3200m run on Friday morning. She's ranked first in the two-mile and fourth in the 1600m.

ROCORI's Cece Woods also has state title aspirations, seeded second in the 100m hurdles after breaking the school record multiple times this season. She's also ranked second in the 300m hurdles and eighth in the 200m.

Apollo has four athletes that will compete this weekend: Tyler Hansen (boys triple jump), Brooke Verkinnes (girls 800m), Libby Lommel (girls pole vault) and Noelle Hackenmueller.

Hackenmueller was top-two in all of her section events, including the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She'll participate in all four at state, with a highest seed of third in the long jump.

Tech boys are sending their first relay team to state in 26 years when their 4x400m relay team competes in prelims on Friday. The Tigers had their 4x400m relay team finish fifth at the 1996 state meet.

Tech will be well represented in the field events on Friday and Saturday. Seniors John Kaczor (shot put) and Garrison Murray (triple jump) both compete in finals on Friday, while Josh Russell (discus) and Murray (high jump) also have finals Saturday. Murray is seeded third in the high jump with a winning mark of 6'3 at sections.
