NEW PHILADELPHIA ― The Tuscarawas County Courthouse will be closed Sept. 16 due to a planned power outage to install a generator. This new generator is meant to better prepare the building for future emergencies. The closure will include the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections office, which is in the Courthouse. The closure will not affect the County Office Building.

Dover library invites teens to weekly events

DOVER ― Dover Public Library invites all local teens in grades 6 through 12 to participate in Teen Tuesdays. Weekly events begin Sept. 13 in the library’s Community Room and run through Dec. 13. All programs will begin at 3 p.m. and run approximately one hour. Registration is not required. Light refreshments will be served. Interested patrons can call the library at 330-343-6123 for more information.

The first Teen Tuesday event, Finances 101, will be Sept. 13. DoverPhila Federal Credit Union will visit the library with a life-size board game about personal finances.

On Sept. 20, the library will host Voices in Poetry, a teen poetry workshop inspired by the novel in verse "Kent State"by Deborah Wiles, this year’s One Book, One Community title.

Game Day will finish September Teen Tuesdays on Sept. 27 at the library. Guest Jen McKee of Dover High School will take over the event to play board, card, and Nintendo Switch games with teen participants. Teens may bring their favorite board game to share at the event.

Weekly events for teens will continue with more games, crafts, and other activities through Dec. 13. Teen Tuesdays are sponsored in part by a 21st Century Afterschool Learning Grant with Dover High School, which supports educational opportunities outside of classroom walls.

Black troops topic of Civil War Round Table's September meeting

DOVER ― The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, at 525 N. Walnut St.

The featured presenter will be Kelly Mezurek, who will present, "Black Men in Blue: The Civil War, Ohioans, and the United States Colored Troops." This presentation will focus on how Ohioans reacted to the enlistment of African American troops, the Ohio black community’s response to the national conflict, and the impact of their service. Special attention will be given to the 5th and 27th USCT, the two Black regiments raised in the state.

Kelly Mezurek is a historian whose work focuses on the Black men who served in the United States Colored Troops and Union navy, both during the American Civil War and in their lives as veterans in the late 19th century. She has published numerous works and is working on an edited volume of private letters sent to and from Black soldiers and sailors during the Civil War.

Stroke awareness program at Dover library

DOVER ― Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Community Health and Wellness will present a program called “BE FAST for Stroke” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Dover Library.  This program is designed to help everyone recognize the signs of stroke and what to do. Participants will also learn about risk factors and prevention.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported in April that more than 795,000 people in the U.S. suffer stroke every year. Almost 25% of those people have had a previous stroke while the other 610,000 suffered a stroke for the first time. Since stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability, it is important that people be aware of this cerebrovascular disease.

Trivia nights resume at dover library 

DOVER ― The fall season of Trivia Nights will resume Sept. 14 in the Community Room at the Dover Public Library, located at 525 N. Walnut St. Teams of two to six players are invited to compete at this fun, friendly, yet competitive evening of trivia. Everyone is welcome even if you don’t belong to a team. Prizes will be provided for members of the winning team. Future trivia nights are: Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. Writers' critique group meets at Dover library

DOVER ― The Dover Public Library hosts a writers' critique group that meets at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the library's Community Room. This month's meeting will be Sept. 15. Members of the public are invited to meet with other writers to critique each other's work and to receive support and encouragement. Poets Group Meets Monthly at Dover LibraryDOVER ― The Dover Library is inviting all people interested in writing poetry to join a newly formed group at the library. The group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month. The group first met in July. This month’s meeting is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 in the community room of the library at 525 N. Walnut St. The goal of the group is to support and encourage fellow poets in their creative pursuits. Participants will have a chance to share their work and receive critique from fellow poets. Dover Library’s Magazine Tapestries of Tuscarawas County Vol. 5 taking submissions

DOVER — Dover Public Library’s literary magazine, Tapestries of Tuscarawas County, has launched its search for submissions for its fifth volume.  The literary magazine encompasses life in Tuscarawas County and aims to preserve the culture of the county as a part of the library’s historical initiative.

The magazine is open to submissions of stories, art and photography from anyone with connections to Tuscarawas County. Citizens are asked to send in their memories of life in Tuscarawas County or their art and photography that have a connection to our community. The library will offer a cash prize in each of the following categories: photography/art, poetry, and written story.

The submission deadline is Oct. 1. The registration form and submission guidelines are available from the library, or by sending email to local history librarian Kim Jurkovic at kjurkovic@doverlibrary.org, or by calling the library at 330-343-6123.
