HENDERSONVILLE - After a brief delay, Patton Pool officially opened to the public on June 3 for the season.

The pool was originally supposed to open Memorial Day weekend, but the City of Hendersonville said in a news release the opening was delayed due to the ongoing installation of a new diving board. The city announced over the weekend that it made the decision to proceed with the opening without the diving board.

Public Works will continue to work through the installation process and provide updates as they become available, the release said. For this week, the pool is open for open swim from 4-6:30 p.m. through June 9 and from noon-6:30 p.m. June 10-11.

The pool's hours are always updated at https://ymcawnc.org/patton-park-and-pool. The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program will run June 5–9 with registration information also on the YMCA website.

Hendersonville Pride holding annual Picnic for Progress

Hendersonville Pride will celebrate its third annual Picnic for Progress from noon-5 p.m. June 10 at Jackson Park.

There will be more than 40 local exhibitors and nonprofits, along with games, rock and face painting, yoga, reiki and seated massages.

There is also a new addition this year: A children’s art festival. Parents can bring the children's creations - paintings, sculptures, photography, jewelry, textile creations - to Pavilion 3 where they will be displayed.

Food trucks Shaa Bingo Jamaican Fare, Texas Brisket, Allie’s Sweet Treats and First United Methodist Church’s food truck will also be there.

St. Baldrick's holding fifth annual head-shaving event

St Baldrick's of Western North Carolina is holding its fifth head-shaving event from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 24 at Ecusta Brewing Company to raise money for childhood cancer research.

According to a news release, all funds raised go to St Baldrick's Foundation to fund research grants in the field of pediatric oncology. Head shaving is the signature event for St Baldrick's with the first one held on St Patrick's Day in 2000.

Barbara Ritchey of Pisgah Forest has been organizing events since 2017, raising over $125,000, and she hopes to raise $15,000 on June 24, she said in the release.

"Recruiting shavees is always the tricky part," she said. "You never know who or how many will sign up or show up, or how much they will raise. In the past, we have had a couple of repeat shavees, but this year, our star attraction is a 15-year shavee from Charlotte, Shawn Malone."

Since St. Baldrick’s began, more than 815,000 men, women, and children have volunteered. A dedicated few have participated for three years or more, entering into the League of Legendary Heroes, while raising countless dollars to help kids with cancer, the release said.

Malone has raised nearly $3,900 during his 15 years of participating. Ritchey will present him with a special plaque, pin and certificate at the June 24 event.

Anyone interested can sign up at https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/wnc2023 as a volunteer, shavee or donor.
