Here’s what we know about a new pizza and ice cream place on Main Street in Fort Mill

The former Emmet’s Social Table site in Fort Mill may not be empty much longer.

A new Facebook page for Center Theatre Pizza & Ice Cream has posted plans to open soon at 100 Main St. The post mentions plans for New York style pizza and ice cream with gluten free, dairy free and vegan options.

In June, Emmet’s announced it would close down after three years in that space by early July. Emmet’s leadership said then a new restaurant concept would follow but the small plate offerings popularized at its Waxhaw, North Carolina restaurant weren’t a good fit in the Fort Mill location, just off the railroad tracks on Main.

“We truly feel it just needs the right place to compliment what the town needs,” a summer post from Emmet’s on Facebook read.

At the time, The Herald ran a story and online poll asking Fort Mill diners what type of food establishment they’d like to see fill that space or locate in the downtown area.

Of the 20 options spanning culinary possibilities and more than 100 votes, the top choice in that online poll with 20% of the total was an Italian or pizza restaurant.

What type of new restaurant should downtown Fort Mill get next?

There’s a history of pizza close to the Center Theatre site. Across the street, where the outside portion of Hobo’s is, the former Tony’s Pizza operated until it burned down in 2007. Just down Academy Street from Center Theatre — so named for its historical use as a theater downtown — another pizza restaurant operated for many years where LOOM Coworking is today.

Downtown Fort Mill landmark torn down

For its part, Emmet’s posted its response to the new Fort Mill pizza spot to update diners on the former location. In the post Emmet’s notes that restaurant continues to look for a larger spot in the area.
