All You Need to Know About Memorial Day Post Office Hours

Freedom in our country has come at a price for many military servicemen and women who have fought with bravery and given their lives. On Memorial Day, we honor the sacrifices of our fellow Americans by celebrating them with festive parades, patriotic songs, military films and a slew of other activities to show our appreciation.

This day of remembrance is also observed as a federal holiday, which means many businesses and stores will be closed. So, if you were hoping to make a stop at your local post office to send a care package or a letter to a veteran, you may be interested to know whether post offices will be open on May 29.

Are post offices open on Memorial Day 2023?

For those of us who need to mail a last-minute package, our best bet is to do it well ahead of May 29. Memorial Day is a federally acknowledged holiday, meaning that all government run businesses, including the post offices, will be closed in observance of it. Because of this, mail will not be delivered on the last Monday in May. Other delivery services including FedEx, Amazon and DHL will also be closed on Memorial Day, though UPS will still offer Express Critical services and FedEx will continue offering Custom Critical services.

What other holidays is the post office closed this year?

  • Juneteenth

  • Christmas Day

What days is mail not delivered?

Mail is typically not delivered on Sundays across the country. The United States Postal Service operates Monday through Saturday in most states, but it is always a good idea to confirm the operating hours with your nearest location before you make plans.
