What you need to know about a special sci-fi-inspired menu this week at Nixta Taqueria

Mexican restaurant Nixta Taqueria, 2512 E. 12th St., will offer a special menu with a post-colonial sci-fi twist starting Tuesday.

The restaurant said the menu draws upon sci-fi by imagining an "alternate universe, with honor for indigenous traditions, techniques and 'Spy Kids' aesthetics." The food is "futuristic as a way of respecting the complex histories of Tex-Mex, the indigenous women who create the genre ... the Chili Queens of San Antonio, the migrant families of the U.S./Mexico border" and more.

The special starts Tuesday and ends Sunday, Feb. 19.

How will this impact service and the regular menu?

Lunch service will be a-la-carte while dinner service will be pre-fixe. The restaurant will not offer a regular menu for the duration of the special.

What kind of food will the sci-fi menu feature?

Food options vary depending on whether it's the lunch a-la-carte service or dinner pre-fixe service. For lunch, Nixta Taqueria will have sopa de fideo, duck enchiladas, crispy potato tacos, orange cake and more. For dinner, there will be chips and salsa, crispy beef tacos, fajitas, payaso and more.

How much are these special food items?

A-la-carte offerings range from $8 for a crispy beef taco to $20 for duck enchiladas. The pre-fixe dinner is $55 per person with some additional cost depending on selections.

Matthew Odam, the Statesman's restaurant critic and reporter, ranked Nixta Taqueria at number five on his 2022 list of best restaurants in Austin. He said the restaurant "has exploded many people’s understanding of what a taco can be."
