What to know, who to watch at Bloomington girls' track regional

There's just one more step to state for the area's girls' track athletes at Tuesday's Bloomington North Regional.

Here's what you need to know and what to watch for as the area's best look to extend their seasons for one more week:

Coming and going

When: Field events and 3,200 relay will start at 6 p.m. with running trials for 100, 200 and 100 hurdles at 6:30. Running finals will begin at 7:20. At least 16 competitors have qualified for each event from sectionals in Bloomington, Bedford, Madison and Terre Haute South.

Advancement: Top three individuals in each event and those who also meet the state standard advance to the state finals on Saturday, June 5 at Indiana University.

Front runners

No one has a bigger gap between themselves and the field coming in that North's Hadley Lucas and South's Lily Myers.

Lucas has the best shot put and discus throws in the state by two feet in the shot and 16 in the discus. Her nearest pursuer in the regional field in shot is nearly six feet away and in discus, 41 feet.

Myers was 50 seconds better than anyone left in the regional field last week in the 3,200 and North's Rachel Allison figures to be her closest pursuer again.

North's Kyla Kante also posted the top time in the 100 hurdles (15.16) by .57, but last year's runner-up, Arielle Phillips of Jeffersonville (15.63) is back.

North's Zoe Prather is one of three top-seeded pole vaulters who made 9-6 last week.

More: Edgewood girls' sprinters and jumpers just getting started as sectionals arrive Tuesday

And Edgewood's second seeded Ella Hayden is likely to need another 17-foot jump to get out as of the top four from last year's regional (who all went 17 feet) are back.

North, South and Northview are the clear top three in the 3,200 relay.

Returning champs

Back to win regional titles again this year are Courtney Jones of Terre Haute South (100 dash, 300 hurdles), Lyric Steele of Charlestown (200), Brooke Trinkle of Seymour (1,600), Kyrstin Fehribach of Paoli (HJ) and Mckenna Jeter of Eastern (Pekin).

In the relays, North and Edgewood are seeded 2-3 in the 400 but defending champ Charlestown and Terre Haute South didn't use a single senior last year. North is No. 1 in the 1,600, but defending champ Martinsville used an all junior lineup last year, while third place West Vigo used three freshmen.

Miracle mile

It's a loaded field in the 1,600 and only three are moving on.

South's Emma Callahan, North's Bea Cakmak and Northview's Ellia Hayes were all under 5:18 last week, but keep an eye on Seymour's Trinkle, who had a 5:12.82 to win last year's regional title. Callahan was fourth by .4.

On the edge

Several area individuals and relays teams are on the bubble seed-wise for state coming in.

Eastern Greene's Anna Tieman may end up having to break the school record in the 200 again to make it out. She's a fourth seed and five went under 27 seconds at sectionals.

The 800 is a race that's sometimes been hard to duplicate from sectional to regional. Last year, North's Bea Cakmak was a call-up, and won. North's Nola Somers Glenn is the top seed (2:20.46) but there are four runners, including Edgewood's Emma Bitner and Seymour standout Trinkle, within four seconds.

South's Kate Barada (12:07.54) is a fifth seed in the 3,200.

Ella Francis (46.84) was third at sectional last year in the 300 hurdles, but comes in as a sixth seed (49.07) just making it back from an injury in time for the postseason from an injury.

In the throws, South's Maya Anderson-Corns is seeded fifth (38-3) and Edgewood's Trista Helms sixth (37-9½) in the shot. North's Annie Galindo is third in discus (117-8) by seven feet. In pole vault, Edgewood's Ashley Abram is tied with one other for fourth seed at 9-0, with three hitting 9-6 last week.
