This Knox County high school just earned another big award: A place on the AP honor roll

After being named among the top 10 high schools in Tennessee earlier this year, L&N STEM Academy has added yet another feather to its cap.

The magnet school earned a spot on the College Board's AP School Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year. The recognition is given to schools that enroll a high number of students in Advanced Placement courses and support their path to college, according to a release shared by the school.

The science, technology, engineering and math school's focus on college was recognized by College Board. The school was recognized for helping with college affordability by enabling 50% of its graduates to earn college credits through the advanced classes. Almost 80% of its seniors took at least one AP exam during high school.

“We are extremely proud of the growth of our AP programming and the success of the students in these courses,” Principal James Allen said in a press release. “These courses represent an opportunity for students to be exposed to rigorous material that will prepare them for life beyond high school.”

The school has 574 students.

Just three months ago, the school in downtown Knoxville was ranked No. 8 in Tennessee and No. 670 nationally in the new U.S. News & World Report list. It was the only Knox County school to make the cut.

The school's list of achievements is long:

  • It's a three-time winner of Tennessee's Apple School of Distinction, awarded to schools that are "centers of leadership and educational excellence," according to Apple.

  • A U.S. News & World Report medalist with silver in 2017, gold in 2016 and bronze in 2015.

  • A three-time recipient of Newsweek's Top 500 American High Schools in 2015-17.

  • A three-time Tennessee Reward School winner.
