A Knoxville brewery expands east and 13 other restaurant openings and closings to know

A Hardin Valley brewery is heading east with beer and pizza.

Orange Hat Brewing Company is working on its second location in partnership with a brand new pizza brand, Baker Boy Pizza.

Here's everything you need to know about this big beer news, plus 13 more openings, closings and additions across Knoxville's bar and restaurant scene.

Orange Hat Brewing Company is working on renovating a space in the Parkridge neighborhood at 701 N. Cherry St., which will be shared by Baker Boy Pizza. It formerly was LaFetta's and is next to Jamaican restaurant Dulcie's Cafe.

Co-founders Rodney Ramin and Brian Hatmaker started Orange Hat in February 2020. They met Jeff Nordgren through the brewery, who is opening Baker Boy.

Orange Hat and Baker Boy will open at the same time, hopefully May or early June, depending on construction and permitting.

The left side of the space will be Orange Hat's tasting room, bar and outdoor patio, blending into Baker Boy's food counter, service window and seating on the right.

The goal is to have both businesses have their own identities without a clear divide between the two.

"It's like the Wu-Tang Clan," Nordgren said. "I think we would all like you to walk from one end of our building to the other if you're not paying attention … and you're in the same place."

Nordgren is keeping Baker Boy's menu under wraps for now, but mentioned classic pies along with craft pizzas and “some new concepts to Knoxville.”

He plans to host a pizza pop-up at Real Good Kitchen soon, with more details to be announced on Instagram @bakerboypizzacompany.

Orange Hat will have a rotating list of beers on draft including pilsners, lagers, sours and IPAs.

Cheers to local beer: 41 must-try breweries in Knoxville and the Smokies

Ramin said he wants Orange Hat to be community focused.

"We're not a biker brewery. We're not a skater brewery. We're just your brewery, your pizza shop. Show up. Tell us what you want, and we'll do our best. We're here for you," Ramin told Knox News.

Ramin and Hatmaker said Orange Hat's Hardin Valley location served customers from the east side of the county, so opening this location gives those customers a closer destination.

"I just feel like the energy's going east with the new stadium, headed toward Holston Hills area, and I want to be a part of that," Hatmaker said.

The brewery and pizza shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily once it opens.

Elkmont Station restaurant opening soon in Farragut

A new restaurant ties elements of Knoxville, Farragut and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park together.

Elkmont Station is slated to open later this month at 103 S. Campbell Station Road in the Farragut Gateway shopping center.

It's named for the Elkmont community, a camp in the Great Smoky Mountains formerly used for logging and as a resort. Colonel William B. Townsend purchased the land and built a railroad.

Founding partner Jake Ogle said the menu isn't finalized, but will change seasonally and will have shrimp and grits, chicken and trout.

"General American cuisine that's got a twist tailored towards this area," Ogle told Knox News.

Ogle is waiting on final permits from the Town of Farragut.

Ogle has experience with restaurants as a co-founder of Scrambled Jake's at 7428 S. Northshore Drive. He's also a partner in Five Oaks Development Group and Ogle Brothers General Store in Sevierville.

Downtown deli Potchke sticks around

One of the biggest hits of last year remains Potchke, a New York City-style Jewish deli located in the Regas building at 318 N. Gay St.

Beginning as a pop-up, Potchke expanded its staff and hours to keep feeding people and was even featured in a New York Times article.

Owners Laurence Faber and Emily Williams have renewed their lease and are operating for at least another year, they told Knox News. They have a dream to open a dinner restaurant but are having fun operating Potchke for the time being. There's even a possibility it stays open longer.

"We keep thinking, 'Where's Potchke's forever home?'" Faber told Knox News. "I feel like it'll be five years down the line being like, 'Where's Potchke's forever home?' and we'll still be here."

The goal is to provide options for the LGBTQ and South Knoxville communities that are affordable. Including pants, shirts, jackets, handbags and jewelry, most prices range between $3-$10, but are flexible for those who can't afford to pay.

"Instead of people coming to a clothing closet, it feels like they're coming to a clothing store," executive director John Camp told Knox News. "The difference is if you don't have the ability to pay … you can just take the clothing and go and then folks in the community that can afford to pay for things help cover the cost of the center."
