Knoxville Catholic football coach Korey Mobbs resigns after eight wins in two seasons

Korey Mobbs resigned as Knoxville Catholic's football coach Tuesday, principal Dickie Sompayrac confirmed to Knox News.

Mobbs went 8-12 in two seasons at Catholic after being introduced as coach in April 2021. He replaced Steve Matthews, who won two state championships in eight seasons.

The Fighting Irish's football season ended in the first round of the Division II Class AAA playoffs after they were beaten by Christian Brothers 41-27. The team finished 3-7 and fifth in the East/Middle Region. This marked the second straight loss to Christian Brothers in the first round of the playoffs.

Catholic lost four games by mercy rule, losing by 30 or more points to Baylor, Lipscomb Academy, McCallie and MBA. All four teams will be in the DII-AAA East Region next season after the TSSAA released its initial regions on Tuesday.

Prior to Catholic, Mobbs coached at Lanier High School in Sugar Hill, Georgia, from 2014-20. At Lanier, he compiled a 58-22 record as the coach. His coaching career started in 2005 when he was an assistant at Collins Hill High School in Georgia and in 2010, he moved to offensive coordinator at Lanier.
