Knoxville's boys hoopers move to 5-0 overall; Galesburg girls claw Panthers of UT

Streaks down Panthers

EAST MOLINE — The Galesburg High School girls basketball team beat United Township 64-31 on Saturday to move to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in Western Big 6 Conference play.

Kiarra Kilgore finished with 19 points to lead the Silver Streaks in the win. The sophomore was the only Galesburg player who finished with double figures.

In sophomore action, Galesburg downed UT 55-43. Addy McLaughlin had 16 points to lead the Silver Streaks. Addison Peck finished with 14 points, and Syriah Boyd chipped in 13 points for Galesburg.

AREA BOYS BASKETBALL

Blue Bullets handle Pioneers

KNOXVILLE — The Knoxville High School boys basketball team handed Rock Island Alleman a 67-29 loss on Saturday.

David Hise led the Blue Bullets with 17 points. Sawyer Tuckey added 11 points, and Kellen McClay and Issac Nolan pitched in nine points each for Knoxville (5-0).

Chargers take home Elgin Spartan Classic title

ELGIN — The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team won the championship of the Elgin Spartan Classic after winning both games in the tournament over the weekend.

The Chargers (9-3) defeated Kalamazoo Valley 86-70 on Friday in the semifinals before beating the host Spartans 68-57 on Saturday in the championship game and have won six of their last seven contests.

Sandburg had five players reach double figures against Kalamazoo Valley, led by 13 points apiece from Myles Estrada and Atem Agot. Agot also added a game-best 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Connor Barnett contributed 12 points and had three assists, and Eric Price scored a dozen after coming in off the bench. Jean Luc Wilson scored 10, had three assists and picked up two steals for Sandburg, which led 40-26 at halftime.

Wilson paced the Chargers in the title game with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and hit 3 of his 5 3-point tries. Estrada scored 13 for Sandburg against the Spartans, and Matt Williams had 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Barnett scored 11 and Agot totaled 10 points for the Chargers, who jumped out to a 23-7 lead in the early going and led 42-35 at the break.

Fighting Scots beat Buccaneers

MONMOUTH — The Monmouth College men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season as they beat Beloit College 75-61 Saturday in the Midwest Conference home opener.

The Fighting Scots put three in double figures, led by Jordan Metcalf with 18 points.

The first half turned into a free throw contest with both teams in the bonus for the final 10 minutes of the half and in the double bonus for the final six minutes. Monmouth was 8-for-17 for the half while Beloit was 10-for-13.

The fouls left both Metcalf and Jonathan Oradiegwu, the Scots two leading scorers on the season, on the bench for most of the first half with two fouls.

After a technical foul on Monmouth head coach Todd Skrivseth, Beloit made a free throw to tie the game at 21. The Scots responded with a 6-0 run on a steal and layup from Kendall Brasfield, a layup by Will Ewald and a long jumper by Amyas Njoku.

Beloit scored five straight to cut the Monmouth lead to 29-28 as the Scots missed four straight free throws. Joseph Oradiegwu made a layup at the first-half buzzer to give the Scots a 31-28 lead. Njoku and Metcalf led the way in the first half with seven points each while Jonathan Oradiegwu had four.

The Scots came out of the half and scored four quick points on baskets in the paint from Yuvraj Sidhu and Metcalf. A jumper from Metcalf and a fast-break layup for Jonathan Oradiegwu gave the Scots their largest lead of the game at 39-31 with 16:40 to play.

Beloit's Scotty Olsen closed the gap by himself with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions before a Monmouth timeout. Out of the timeout Metcalf completed a 3-point play but Olsen hit another triple after an offensive rebound.

Metcalf scored nine of the first 13 points for the Scots in the second half before Briar Greenman drilled a corner 3-pointer for a 47-42 lead. Brasfield drilled a 3-pointer and Ewald made a layup as the Scots went on top 53-44 with 11:00 left.

The Monmouth lead reached 11 before the Bucs went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 55-51. Monmouth called timeout but Oradiegwu picked up his fourth foul on the ensuing possession with 8:16 to play. Sidhu buried a wing 3-pointer to beat the shot clock and put the Scots up 60-53.

The Scots led by nine after Njoku scored in the lane and he followed two missed Beloit free throws for another layup. With 2:23 to play Beloit was called for an intentional foul and Jonathan Oradiegwu made both free throws for a 70-57 lead. He grabbed a layup on the next possession for a 15-point lead with 1:55 to play. The Scots ran the clock from there and won the game 75-61 to move to 1-1 in the MWC.

Metcalf led the way with 18 points while Jonathan Oradiegwu and Njoku both had 13. Sidhu and Greenman had seven each and Brasfield led the team with three steals.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chargers drop pair at John Wood Classic

QUINCY — Addison Eger continued her hot start to the season, but the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team dropped a pair of contests at the John Wood Classic over the weekend.

The Chargers lost 58-46 on Friday to the host Blazers before losing 65-43 on Saturday to Lake Land, the No. 4 team in NJCAA Division II.

Eger led all players with a season-high 25 points — just two off her career high — in Friday’s loss to John Wood. She finished 9 of 20 from the floor and grabbed a team-leading six rebounds. Kelsi Legge added eight points and four boards for the Chargers against the Blazers.

Eger led Sandburg in scoring and rebounding again Saturday against Lake Land, collecting a game-best 20 points and pulling down six boards. The sophomore went 6 of 11 from the field and hit 8 of her 10 shots at the foul line.

Eger has led the Chargers in scoring in all seven games this season, recording at least 20 points six times. She’s averaging 21.0 points per game, which ranks 11th nationally.

Lily Hudgins scored eight points for Sandburg (1-6) against the Lakers, hitting both of her 3-point tries and going 3 of 3 overall.

Morgan's career-high 26 points lead Scots to win

MONMOUTH — The Monmouth College women's basketball team built a big lead early and never looked back in an 84-40 Midwest Conference win over Beloit College on Saturday.

Senior Josie Morgan hit five 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 26 points for the Fighting Scots (5-2, 2-0).

The teams traded baskets early as both made a 3-pointer in the first two minutes for a 5-5 game. Kaitlyn Osmulski made a pair of free throws to give Monmouth their first lead. Zoie Wall drilled a 3-pointer and Morgan scored on consecutive possessions before a Beloit timeout paused an 11-0 Scots run.

Osmulski pushed the run to 12 with a free throw and a 15-5 lead. After Beloit scored to stop the run, Morgan completed a 3-point play for an 18-7 Monmouth advantage. Monmouth pushed the lead to 14 on a free throw by Tarae Warner and a layup by Osmulski. Beloit missed two free throws and Lily Harlan knocked down a mid-range jumper for a 23-7 lead.

Harlan scored the first basket of the second quarter to put the Scots up by 18. Beloit went on a 4-0 run but Harlan scored inside and Jadyn MItchell got a 3-point play for a 30-11 lead. Jordan Kintigh scored off a turnover to put the Scots up 21 and Beloit called a timeout with 4:29 left in the half.

Monmouth pushed the lead to 25 with a couple free throws before Beloit scored five straight points to cut the lead to 36-16. The teams traded free throws and Kintigh scored in the post as the Scots took a 42-21 lead into the halftime break.

Beloit started the second half with a 4-0 run before Morgan nailed a 3-pointer on the wing. Mitchell split free throws with 6:47 left in the third quarter, her first miss of the season after 20 straight makes. Warner made a 3-pointer from the corner for a 51-29 lead and Harlan followed with a layup.

Beloit cut the lead down to 18 after a couple Monmouth turnovers. Morgan responded with a layup and Warner made a 3-pointer from the wing to end the third quarter with Monmouth on top 58-35.

The Scots pushed the lead to 31 with a 3-pointer by Morgan, a layup from Osmulski and a 3-pointer by Wall. Kintigh made a free throw to push the Monmouth run to 14 straight before Morgan and Wall both connected from deep for a 73-35 lead. The 20-0 run ended when Elizabeth Kalk made a free throw with 5:15 to play.

Morgan nailed another 3-pointer to establish a new career high with 23 points and push the Monmouth lead to 76-38. She made another 3-pointer to push the lead to 82-40 and freshman Delaney Scheidenhelm made two free throws for the final two points of the game.

Morgan netted a career-high 26 points to go with three assists and eight rebounds. Osmulski had 12 points and Warner 10 to also get into double digits.
