Koalas on Road to Recovery After Car Accident

A mother and daughter koala duo from Glen Oak, New South Wales, were on the road to recovery after being hit by a car in late December, 2023.

Mikayla, a mother koala, and Sharon, Mikayla’s joey, were admitted to the ICU at Port Stephens Koala Hospital with Mikayla suffering multiple injuries.

“X-ray and ultrasound the following morning by Dr Don confirmed fractured jaw, nose, broken teeth, and partial loss of tongue as well as a cracked collarbone,” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post. “Baby Sharon, however, was fine, possibly a Christmas miracle.”

Video filmed by the hospital shows the two koalas arriving at their new ICU room and being helped onto a perch.

“Mikayla continues to improve but still has a long way to go. Baby Sharon is in fine fettle,” said the hospital. Credit: Port Stephens Koala Hospital via Storyful
