Kohler-Andrae plans Fall Candlelight Hike, and more news in weekly dose
SHEBOYGAN — Kohler-Andrae State Park, 1020 Beach Park Lane, Sheboygan, will host a Fall Candlelight Hike from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7.
Enjoy the evening sights and sounds of fall as you enjoy a self-guided walk along torch-lit trails.
Then, join Mike and JR, of The Water Street Hot Shots, for some acoustic blues and roots around the campfire.
There will be kids’ activities, too.
The hike starts near the indoor shelter near parking lot P7. Vehicle admission is required. For more details, call 920-451-4080.

Wade House unveils character cards depicting historic people who frequented the Stagecoach Inn
Character cards, depicting the life and times of 20 individuals who lived, worked or traveled through the town of Greenbush during the heyday of stagecoach travel, will now be part of the historic Wade House visitor experience.
The 1850s Stagecoach Inn, a Wisconsin Historical Society Site between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan at W7965 State 23 in Greenbush, once fed and housed thousands of guests traveling across the country.
Guests who visit the Wade House will be given a character card upon entering the visitor center. Each card, measuring 2 inches by 3 inches, features a person who resided at or visited the Wade House or lived in the Greenbush area.
One side of the card features an artistic rendering of an individual in a contextualized historic setting, and the other side shares information about the individual’s life, role in the community and what daily life was like in that era.
“The cards allow each guest to identify with a historic person who once had a connection to the Wade House Stagecoach Inn,” Wade House Director Bridgitt Zielke said in a news release. “By connecting with real people from the past who occupied the same space they’re currently visiting today, guests can experience the stories of our historic site in a new way and gain a better understanding of what the town of Greenbush was like and what life was like, from 1850 to 1870.”
Funded by the Kohler Foundation Grant program, guests may keep their cards as a souvenir of their day spent at the Wade House.
The Wade House is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays through Nov. 4. The visitor center and carriage museum are open from Nov. 5 through May 2024. General admission for adults is $15, $13 for seniors, $8 for children 5-12 and free for children younger than 5. Weill Center brings Bored Teachers to stage in May; show expected to sell out
The Bored Teachers' “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Comedy Tour is set for a 7:30 p.m. May 11 show at Sheboygan’s Weill Center. Tickets went on sale to the public Sept. 29.
“Bored Teachers continues to sell out in venues across the nation, and we’re proud to have Sheboygan on the tour list,” said Katy Glodosky, executive director of the Weill Center, in a news release. “The experience of being a teacher to children is relevant for so many in and out of the classroom, so this we be a great night of laughs for everyone.”
Having gained popularity and hundreds of millions of views on the internet, Bored Teachers are a group of teacher-comedians who perform skits to bring a lighthearted approach to the stress and struggles that come along with the profession.
Weill Center said the show is expected to sell out.

ELG High School Band’s annual pie sale begins — order apple by Oct. 5, cherry by Nov. 1
The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School Band’s annual pie sale is under way.
Dutch apple pies will be assembled by the band and their family members on Oct. 14.
On Nov. 18, the band and family members will assemble cherry pies. The cherries are from Door County.
The pies can be frozen and baked.

Local Eagle Scout takes on project to help grow more fresh produce for neighbors in need
Sheboygan County resident and Eagle Scout Isaac Brashaw spent part of his summer working on an Eagle Scout project he developed with the goal of establishing raised garden beds at Sheboygan County Food Bank.
“I decided to help (SCFB) because of their impactful mission to eliminate food insecurity here in Sheboygan County,” Brashaw said in a news release. “I volunteered for (SCFB) many times in the past and I thought a helpful way to help them out is to build the garden beds so they can grow fresh produce for members in the community.”
Brashaw presented his plan to SCFB and then coordinated a weekend-long brat fry to help fund the materials he needed to purchase.
With help from his family and fellow Eagle Scouts, he built and installed six raised garden beds at the front of SCFB’s warehouse.
Patrick Boyle, executive director of Sheboygan County Food Bank, said in the release: “We’re very grateful that Isaac put in so much work to help raise money for and install the raised garden beds. We’ll be able to get more fresh produce in the hands of local families in need, for years to come, and hopefully inspire others to do the same at their homes, organizations they’re a part of and places they work.”
To help prepare and maintain nutrient-rich dirt for the raised beds, SCFB recently invested in a composter. SCFB will add food scraps, coffee grounds and other compostable materials to the composter and encourage the team to take in their own compostable food waste to add from home.
SCFB said it plans to create a volunteer committee to help tend to the raised beds and will grow leafy greens, tomatoes, green beans and more.
The produce will be harvested and distributed through the food bank’s network of food pantries, its Herb Kohler and Natalie Black Community Café, and the new Hmong Cafe that serves free, Hmong-cuisine meals.
SCFB accepts both fresh and non-perishable food donations between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays-Fridays at 3115 N. 21st St., Sheboygan. The food bank said food and cash donations are especially important right now in the wake of inflation and other challenges keeping the cost of living high for families.
So far in 2023, SCFB said it has been serving about 5,000 families each month through food pantries and other partner agencies, which is up almost 60% from 2022.

ATHENA Leadership Awards nominees sought
Sheboygan County Chamber is seeking nominations for three 2023 ATHENA Leadership Awards.
Awards this year include ATHENA Leadership Award, ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award and ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award.
The ATHENA Leadership Awards celebrate exemplary leadership and are reflective of a quote by Plato: “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.” More than 7,000 recipients have been honored with the ATHENA Leadership Award since the program’s inception in 1982.
