Kohler grad inducted into Track Coaches Hall of Fame, Sheboygan candidate forums set and more news in weekly dose

SHEBOYGAN - Rose McGinnis Radke, a 1992 graduate of Kohler High School, was inducted into the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame Feb. 4.

McGinnis qualified for the state track meet all four years of high school. She was favored to win the 100M hurdles her freshman year but a false start in the finals meant she would wait until her sophomore year to take the championship, which she successfully defended her junior and senior years.

As a senior in 1992, McGinnis set a state track record of 15:15 in the 100M hurdles; a record that stood for three years.

In both her junior and senior years, McGinnis took two individual state championships by winning the 300M hurdles as well as the 100M hurdles.

McGinnis’s performances in both the 100M and 300M hurdles and as a member of a 400M relay team earned her not only school records in each of those events, but Central Lakeshore Conference records, all of which still stand today.

Rose McGinnis Radke has lived in Westby since 2015 with her husband, Bret, and sons Ronan and Aonghus. She is now a substitute in the Westby Area School District.

Crane counters sought: International Crane Foundation will sponsor the 47th annual Midwest Crane Count from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. April 15.

New Sheboygan County volunteers interested in taking part in the survey should first contact their local county coordinators for instructions — Janet and Andy Raddatz at araddatz@wi.rr.com.

An organizational crane count meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 7 at Maywood, 3615 Mueller Road, in Sheboygan. During that meeting, people can select their count site, learn how to submit data and review the calls of cranes.

More than 1,800 volunteer participants from throughout Wisconsin and portions of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Minnesota participate in the spring survey, which gathers information about the abundance and distribution of cranes in the upper Midwest.

The International Crane Foundation sponsors the annual Midwest Crane Count as part of its mission to conserve the world’s 15 species of cranes and the natural communities on which they depend.

Sandhill cranes once nearly disappeared from Wisconsin, but the species has successfully recovered and is slowly expanding into neighboring states.

Observations of sandhill cranes can lend insight into threatened crane species, including the endangered whooping crane.

There are now approximately 75 whooping cranes in the reintroduced population in central Wisconsin, and crane counters may have a chance of sighting a whooping crane during the survey.

Sheboygan County register of deeds warns of scam: Ellen R. Schleicher, Sheboygan County register of deeds, is warning homeowners about a home warranty scam.

According to a news release from Schleicher’s office, a number of residents across the state have reported receiving a letter in the mail from “Home Warranty Direct,” which has the title “County Deed Records.”

In this mailer, people are urged to purchase a home warranty claiming the current home warranty “may be expiring or may have already expired.”

Each letter contains the same claim, even if the homeowner has never purchased a home warranty.

The letter asks for a response to the notice by a certain date and threatens that failing to respond could result in a potential loss of coverage.

“Solicitations that use threatening language or unnecessary urgency are almost always a scam,” Schleicher said in the release.

Schleicher’s office recommends those interested in purchasing a home warranty do so after doing thorough research as well as a check with the Better Business Bureau. Her office also said letters from Home Warranty Direct should be ignored and discarded.

The news release shared the following ways to prevent yourself from becoming the victim of fraud:

  • The best way to protect yourself from insurance fraud is to research the agent and company you are considering.

  • Stop before paying for anything, signing any paperwork or providing any personal information.

  • Confirm the company and agent are licensed to operate in Wisconsin. Licensing information can be found on the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance website at oci.wi.gov or by calling OCI at 1-800-236-8517.
