Korean grocery star H Mart is opening its first Sacramento store. Here’s when and where

H Mart is coming to Sacramento.

The New Jersey-based Korean supermarket chain will open its first area location at 6366 Mack Road near the Valley Hi Drive intersection, according to a “COMING SOON” banner hanging outside the vacant retail space Wednesday.

H Mart will take over a space formerly occupied by Food Source, a discount supermarket owned by Raley’s that closed in that location in 2020.

An H Mart representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The largest supermarket chain in the United States, H Mart was founded in 1982 and has spread from cultural cornerstone to mainstream darling over the past few years.

Some of that social growth can be credited to Michelle Zauner, the half-Korean lead singer for indie band Japanese Breakfast, who titled her bestselling 2021 memoir “Crying in H Mart” after writing a 2018 story in The New Yorker under the same name.

But H Mart has expanded, too, opening two San Jose stores and another in San Francisco within the past six years, with a Dublin location on the way. This will be the first Sacramento-area store, and is expected to compete with nearby Asian grocers 99 Ranch Market as well as KP International Market in Rancho Cordova.
