S. Korean universities live-stream cheer festival
A cheerleading competition
without the applause
Location: Seoul, South Korea
Two rival schools went head-to-head
for the annual campus event

But this year the performance
took place in an empty theater
and was live-streamed
due to social distancing measures
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) HEAD OF KOREA UNIVERSITY CHEERING SQUAD, LEE SU-HYEONG, SAYING:
"The most important thing in cheerleading is the interaction between us and the audience through eye contact and communicating with them in person, and that is real cheering. So, I was really worried about whether we can do this from separate places, but it was successful and students enjoyed it a lot, which is way better than I expected."
More than a thousand people
watched the event online
to support the teams
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) 20-YEAR-OLD, YONSEI UNIVERSITY STUDENT, SHIN NA-YEONG, SAYING:
"This is ridiculous, but enjoyable as well. I think we are the only generation who can enjoy this online cheerleading festival. It's quite an unusual experience."
