Kourtney Kardashian’s Latest Detox Will Shock You

You’d think that giving up gluten, dairy, red meat, and sugar would be enough for Kourtney Kardashian to look and feel her best...

...but the eldest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan felt the need to begin an intense detox regimen in hopes of turbo charging her health. After her doctor found high levels of lead and mercury in her system, Kourt decided to take on a strict cleanse that would put her body in a state of ketosis (when the body burns fat instead of glucose for energy). Fortunately for our judging pleasure, she shared it on her exclusive app and website—and here’s exactly what she plans to do for the next three months:

On this diet, Kardashian eats three low carb meals a day that are high in protein and healthy fats. Since she’s only allowed to eat “minimal amounts of fruit,” she’ll sip on an avocado smoothie for breakfast and have light lunches and dinners consisting of protein and veggies. And it just keeps getting harder and harder. Breakfast is supposed to be eaten 14 to 16 hours post dinner and she tries to power through a weekly 24-hour fast of only water and bone broth. “I’m not going to sugarcoat it, this detox is difficult,” she shared. “On fasting days, I try to stay busy and, if I’m home, I’ll avoid going into the kitchen.”

Let’s cut to the chase—is this detox worth the trouble? Jim White, RD and Certified Personal Trainer, explains to Eat This, Not That! that while the calorie and carb deficit associated with this type of diet will help you lose weight fast, it’s not ideal for the long haul. “Since carbs help fuel our brain and bodies,” White explains, “following this strict cleanse can have a negative effect on our energy levels and workouts, and cause confusion, nausea, and even vomiting.” And if you’re trying to rid your body of toxins like Kourt is, White reassures, “the liver is an amazing detoxifier that can do its own job.”

Instead of depriving yourself of major food groups or taking up fasting (which is likely to cause a progress-derailing binge), White recommends limiting excessive intake of alcohol, coffee, added sugars and unhealthy fats, and drinking more water to achieve your weight loss goals and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
