Krava: Licking County Recycling offers resources for your spring cleaning

Are you doing some spring cleaning in your home? Are you seeing lots of trash and debris along the roadways or in your neighborhood? If so, Licking County Recycling has some resources for you.

If you want to do a clean up with your family, a civic group, coworkers, or friends, we have some items that will help you with your efforts that you can borrow for free! Clean up supplies come in a backpack that includes safety vests, disposable gloves and bags. We have long-handled grabbers you can borrow, too. Each backpack is prepared for about 10 participants. Call our office (740-670-5125) to get further details on how to schedule these items for use.

While cleaning out your house this spring, you might be wondering how to dispose of (or recycle, in some cases) large items like appliances or mattresses. Unfortunately, we see these items dumped at our public recycling drop off sites, but this is not the proper way to dispose of them.

Many times, your trash hauler will pick up "bulk" items from your curb with your trash. If you have such items, call your trash hauler to find out what their policies are about bulk pickup and if there are extra fees. Large appliances with a lot of metal can be recycled at local scrap yards, if you are able to get them there. If you are buying a new appliance, ask about removal of the old appliance from the company that is delivering your new item so it can be properly recycled without you having to lift a finger.

Finally, if you have tires at your home or have picked up any along the roadside, they also need to be properly disposed of/recycled. Call your local tire store to see if they will take your tires for recycling, but be aware there will almost always be a fee. If you have a larger number of tires to dispose of, it’s best to take them to a licensed tire disposal/recycling facility that handles mass amounts of tires. Liberty Tire in Grove City and Tyrex Resources in Zanesville are the closest facilities to Licking County. Please know that you may only transport up to 10 tires at a time, per state law.
