Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President, has stated that Russia will continue the war even after sham referendums are conducted, and it will aim to occupy the entire territory of Donetsk Oblast.

Quote: "At least, [this is] what I can tell you with absolute certainty, and you know that not all territories of Donetsk People’s Republic [self-proclaimed republic in Donetsk Oblast – ed.] are liberated yet. We are talking about the territory which is within [the borders set in] 2014."

Details: Therefore, as Peskov says, a minimum task is "to liberate the whole territory of Donetsk People’s Republic".

Background:

  • On 16 September, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that he "would do everything" to end the war as soon as possible, but he was indignant that Ukraine wanted to win militarily.

  • Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the Head of the President’s Office, is convinced that at the moment there is no point either in negotiations or in the meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the fast ending to the war in Ukraine at the moment is unlikely, in spite of a successful counteroffensive of Ukrainian forces.
