She replaces Jeff Moore, who will retire in June. Moore has served Canton Local for the past 13 years, becoming principal in 2014.

Gearhart heads up the Career Technical Education for the South Stark Career Academy and is the director of student services for Canton Local Schools. The 1997 graduate returned to her alma mater as a high school counselor in 2008 and took on the role of CTE director in 2013.

"Krista embodies the spirit of leadership and dedication to education that defines Canton South High School. Her wealth of administrative experience and unwavering commitment make her the perfect fit to guide our students and staff," Superintendent Brett Yeagley said.

Yeagley pointed out that Moore's leadership has left an "indelible mark" on the school community.

Canton South Middle School Principal Brian Mohn will replace Gearhart as the director of CTE for the South Stark Career Academy next school year. He began his career at Canton Local in 2006, teaching middle school science and math until his promotion to assistant high school principal 2014. Mohn was named assistant middle school principal in 2017 and head principal in 2019.

"We are pleased to have the right candidate internally to lead our career tech compact," added Yeagley. "Brian's integrity and passion for career tech education make him the ideal leader for the South Stark Career Academy, ensuring our students receive the best opportunities for success in the trades."

The district also announced classes are canceled on April 8 for the total solar eclipse.
