Kristen Stewart has revealed why she chose to come out publicly on Saturday Night Live.

The Twilight star shared her sexuality with the world during her monologue on the late-night comedy show in 2017, following her relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson.

In a new interview with Variety, Stewart explained that she wanted to control how the story was broken.

"It was cool to frame it in a funny context because it could say everything without having to sit down and do an interview," she said.

Detailing the planning that went into the iconic monologue, the actress ran through the questions she had to consider before coming out publicly.

"'So what platform is that going to be on? And who's going to make money on that? And who's going to be the person that broke it?' I broke it, alone," she explained.

Stewart went on to reveal that she'd been openly dating women for years prior to her SNL appearance. "It wasn't even like I was hiding," she said.

"I was so openly out with my girlfriend for years at that point. I'm like, 'I'm a pretty knowable person.'"

The Spencer star has a busy year ahead. She is set to star alongside Beef's Steven Yeun in post-apocalyptic romance Love Me, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival between January 24 and 28.

Her upcoming thriller Love Lies Bleeding will also debut at Sundance. Directed and co-written by Rose Glass, the film will see Stewart become a reclusive gym manager who falls hard for an ambitious bodybuilder (Katy O'Brian).

"There was something about having the things that I have found attractive be really glorified," said Stewart.

"It was really sexy. And I don't mean from an outsider's perspective: I felt turned on by it, and it was cool to have people witness that."

Love Me will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. Love Lies Bleeding is released in US cinemas on March 8, 2024 and in UK cinemas on April 19, 2024.
