Kroger planning new East End store across from major competitor coming to Louisville

Kroger is planning to build a new supermarket across the street from where a new-to-market competitor is setting up shop.

Plans filed with the city Monday call for a nearly 62,000-square-foot grocery store at 10010 Ballardsville Road in Louisville’s East End. A wine and spirits shop, a seven-pump gas station and nearly 300 parking spaces are also included in the plan for the nearly 9-acre parcel.

No construction timetable on the proposed Kroger location was provided.

The Cincinnati-based grocer intends to build its store directly across the street from a planned Publix supermarket.

The Florida-based competitor unveiled plans in late 2021 to open a grocery at the northeast corner of Ballardsville Road and Brownsboro Road with a goal of opening in early 2024.

Publix announced in September 2021 it was entering the Louisville market with a location at 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd.

A Kroger spokeswoman did not provide additional details on the proposed project nor give comment on the store’s proximity to the planned Publix.

The property, at New Chamberlain Lane and Ballardsville Road, is owned by Eastmoor Acres Realty Company. The empty lot has an assessed value of $2.18 million, according to Jefferson County Property Valuation Administration records.

Kroger operates more than 110 stores in Kentucky and nearly 2,800 supermarkets across 35 states. As of early 2022, the company employed about 20,000 across the Bluegrass State.

The Louisville area was the company’s 17th largest market, with more than 40 stores, as of 2020.

Publix has announced plans to build three stores, set to open in 2023-2024. All are located eastern Jefferson County.
